California firm detects lead in 3 more products

A California-based educational products company that recalled 2,500 easels this year for being coated with lead paint has identified three more of its products as containing illegal levels of lead. No recalls have been ordered of the products, although the company in a letter to the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce said it has notified the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission of its findings. Ron Elliott, chief executive of Excelligence Learning Corp., said in the letter that the products, which had been sold through the company's Discount School Supply division, have been taken off the market. The letter does not disclose the number of units sold, and Elliott did not return telephone calls for comment. In a separate letter to the House committee, Dollar General Corp., which announced a recall this year of 396,000 key chains for containing lead, also reported that it has informed the CPSC of identifying 192,000 more key chains contaminated with lead. The committee began two days of hearings Wednesday, during which CPSC officials took part of the blame for a system that that allowed children to be exposed to lead-tainted toys. Read more
