    Fiery dummy

First of all, full disclosure: the closest I've ever came to a Fiery is carrying one around in a box. So my understanding of Fiery is pretty much nil.
Still, there was a person who recently posted to the base "Copier Technical Discussion" forum that needed to be directed to the proper manufacturers forum, and I did my best to do so. I think they were asking for help with a fiery though, which made me curious:
Um, is Fiery some sort of universal graphics interface for printers? I have seen around here that a variety of equipment manufactures offer Fiery in some fashion.

A Fiery is an external controller for a color copier. Most are manufactured by EFI, Object moved.

The software is customized for each manufacturer and different copiers. Some are small, UNIX based and others are larger, Windows based. It allows the end user a different set of tools for color printing.

It does not enhance the gamut of the copier it is installed in, but it can help in environments that need to do Pantone matching, spot colors, or if the run they made 6 months ago has to be exactly the same as the run they are going to make today. It also supports a large and more defined media range. The software included with (or purchased add ons) can be used to hold jobs for reprinting at a later date, much higher calibration support, Hot Folders, and some nifty print drivers like Fiery view. It's best use is in the production environment (print shop) but have seen it used correctly in marketing departments. Emujo
If you don't see your question answered in the forum, please don't think it's OK to PM me for a personal reply...I do not give out firmware and/or manuals.

The previous place I worked would buy in machines with Fiery attached. They would have the service tech's remove the Fiery units off the machine an store them in the warehouse. We never really got to play around with them very much.
I could understand management point of view as the MFD could interface with any PC so why would they require a Fiery.

Actually in Fiery World, in which I do play It's usually all about color management and the quality of output, customer expectations and skill levels as well as the occasional VDP applications for B/W and color..... The customers that will drop the big coin for the REAL Fiery's have different expectations than the casual fiery user with the baby fiery that some sales person blew up their ass................................
