I keep hearing saying that the Second Amendment had to do with the musket and has nothing to do with modern military style weapons. At the time the Second Amendment was written, the musket was the modern military weapon.

Can you explain to me exactly you would propose making all the existing weapons in the world disappear? If I could snap my fingers and have that happen, I would. But I can't. The only one who could is the Lord Jesus Christ and he has been kicked out of schools and government. The original intent of the Second Amendment was the the citiizen should have access to the same degree of weaponry that the government has. Take that away you will never be able to defend yourself and your family when the jack booted storm troopers come pounding pounding at your door.

The "jack booted Storm troopers" seem (IMHO) to be from the 'red' side of the isle.
We will not be able to make all assault weapons disappear, but we can stop making them available to most anyone.
and are RPGs and ABMs next for the next door neighbor?

I have read and re-read your 2nd amendment, all two lines of it, and all I see is authorizing the forming of militias. I do not see in those two lines where is says the citizenry should armed as well as the military. It does however say these militias should be "well regulated"

The second amendment protects our right to defend ourselves against a federal government. THAT is its purpose. The idea of a state controlled militia is gone. We no longer have it. It's replaced by the NG. And yet, the NG can be commandeered by the federal government... so it's still necessary for citizens to keep their rights. It's the idea of every citizen to be able to band together to form an army--one powerful enough to fight the federal government.

So... if we're going to stick with exactly what the founding fathers meant, that means the citizens should be allowed to own just as many weapons as our army. Afterall, THAT's who we have to defend ourselves from.

As a Canadian, this idea is lost on you, because your all-powerful government holds supreme rights. But for many of us Americans, the idea of a free society was never lost, and is still worth fighting for. Even if we have to deal with retarded teenagers.

But you don't see those teens in my area protesting. Most of them are gun owners.

Exactly where in your 2nd amendment does it say you will need to defend yourselves against your own government? And where exactly does it say citizens should be as well armed as the army? I just don't see it in those two lines of text.

In OZ we don't have hand guns/concealed weapons for easy open purchase.

The only ones with hand guns are licensed police/security, gun club members and the rare vermin controllers.
Australia is fully armed with enough rifles in each home to thwart a domestic or foreign protest down to crawling pace while we become battle ready, in about 24hrs.

The average Aussie home has one or more persons quite capable of using a high powered rifle, with extreme accuracy at a great distance if necessary.
The need for concealed hand guns has never been an issue with most Australian. The average aussie farmer/pastoralist openly displays a rifle in one or more of their vehicles while doing work on a property. Rifles (not hand guns) are a necessary way of life in out back Australia. People generally have no fear of a non-hidden openly displayed rifle.

In IMHO concealed weapons/fire arms are the general problem abroad. Most would argue that "people not guns" are the problem. If you could prevent one part of a given problem then you may be on the way to solving the overall dilemma. Stopping the concealment of fire arms may be a band aid measure to the overall problem. Is it worth trying to solve the rouge gunner problem? Apart from melting down every weapon (guns,bombs,knifes) on the entire planet, I don't see how the rouge/loner gun issue can be resolved.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The purpose of the militia is to protect the freedoms of the STATE, not the country. What protects the freedom FROM is nationalization and an overbearing government. That was the thinking. The entire document stresses this.

As a Canadian, you wouldn't have the background to understand this, because most other nations think of the "state" as part of the government. The constitution specifically limits the rights of the federal government against the state's and against the citizens. You wouldn't be able to understand this, because your laws are against people. But the constitution isn't about the people. It's the foundation of all law in America, and its aim is against the government, not the people. This is a way of thinking that most people outside the US can't really get their brains around.
