    Private Message Help Line

I will occasionally get a private message where someone will ask a technical question. Sometime I even get these request on my profile page. In either case it is beginning to irritate me because by not posting issues in the technical forum it kind of defeats the whole purpose of the forum.

Does anyone else see this as a problem. How do you guys handle it?

You can always just ignore them.
I get requests for manuals all the time as well. I give them my standard answer of where they can buy it.
You can't imagine how many people ask me just to send them free manuals. They don't even have the courtesy to say please. Unbelievable!
Sorta reminds me of some of the people on this board.

If they are polite I reply that they should post to the correct forum for all to see and respond to.

If they seem like a jerk-off I just hit delete and move on with my life.

There are some people who are here just to request and beg for free manuals. They don't contribute anything ever. Most of them are foreigners.

I get questions from time to time also, both as comments and as private messages. I usually respond and give them a link to post the message to the board. The ones I have received have been from new users with few or no posts. My assumption is they don't know how to post a new thread or properly navigate the site. Being familiar with message boards I haven't looked, but is there a tutorial or how to section for new users to learn how to use the site?

              In MSDOS you type
              C:\>format C:

Leave it to a Vulcan to ask an illogical question.

I think that may have been Vulcan humor.

I got a private message last week that only said "I changed the nic so is the power supply good?"
What the F*$k does this mean?
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

you should be flattered someone asked you a technical question. They obviously trust that you know what you're doing. perhaps they didnt want to appear stupid. However, it is true that the post should be in the forum so others can see it but some people talk down to those with less experience in one way or another.

By the way, I personally think Vulcans are pretty darn smart. I didnt know how to format a hard drive for a Toshiba estudio 452 copier either.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

You have a valid point and I will not dispute it. I've taken a gentler tone when I get PM's. That was the reason I started this thread, for good advice and opinions like your own ... I do listen.

As for the 'Vulcan' you might notice he is on my friends list. His post on this thread was just him being a smartass. He is actually among the best Toshiba technicians I know (although he is doing Konica/Minolta now) ... so him asking a question like that really was illogical.

Ah Mr. Spock, the "logical" question would be how can you format the drive you are currently using??!! A respectable alien would know you would have to boot from a floppy or CD then format from there.
