This introduces some interesting possibilities and as well as a couple of major cans of worms.

It appears to be aimed mainly at bringing in vitro fertilization embryos to full term. It will eliminate the potential legal and emotional complication of hiring a surrogate mother. If it can also allow the transfer of an embryo from a human womb to the artificial womb it will pretty much end the abortion debate.
As for the cans of worms, first as mentioned in the article is gene splicing. There are many who are totally opposed to the idea of gene splicing or as some might say, build-a-baby. The other is the potential for cloning. As I remember there was a lot of opposition to the idea of cloning humans 25 years ago after the announcement of Dolly the cloned sheep. Cloning coupled with gene splicing brings to mind the Science Fiction scenarios of created super humans such as depicted in the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The picture in the article is similar to what is seen in Science Fiction depictions of cloning creches.
