When Dr. Anthony Fauci returned to the White House briefing room on Thursday, he did so without the sour reality of a hostile president watching him from feet away in the Oval Office.

"I can tell you, I take no pleasure at all in being in a situation of contradicting the President," Fauci told the room, appearing nonetheless to take some pleasure in no longer having to dance around President Donald Trump's turbulent ego.

"The idea that you can get up here and talk about what you know, what the evidence, what the science is -- let the science speak," he added. "It is somewhat of a liberating feeling."

"One of the things that was very clear as recently as about 15 minutes ago, when I was with the President, is that one of the things that we're going to do is to be completely transparent, open and honest," Fauci said. "If things go wrong, not point fingers but to correct them. And to make everything we do be based on science and evidence."

"We are still in a very serious situation," Fauci said as he began his remarks, calling the recently passed death toll of 400,000 "historic in a very bad sense."

"One of the things new with this administration is if you don't know the answer, don't guess," he said. "Just say you don't know the answer."

"Our findings show that hydroxychloroquine is safe for COVID-19 and not associated with a risk of ventricular arrhythmia due to drug-induced QTc interval prolongation. Additionally, hydroxychloroquine was well tolerated, and there were no drug-related non-serious adverse events leading to treatment discontinuation in the majority of patients who were stable and did not require hospitalization." The hastily put together clinical studies last year were wrong.

President Biden has "bigger issues" to worry about than following his own rule about wearing a face mask on federal property, according to White House press secretary Jennifer Psaki.

The new president ditched his face mask for a period of time while addressing the public Wednesday from the Lincoln Memorial, on federal land, and as he stood at the foot of the statue of the nation’s 16th president, C-SPAN footage shows. He put his mask on after the address. Hours earlier, he had signed a mandate requiring masks on federal property, as well as on interstate public travel.

The older Biden grandchildren and Biden’s daughter Ashley were also spotted without masks.


Fox News’ Peter Doocy questioned the press secretary about the Biden family’s maskless moments during a Thursday briefing. Psaki said that the president had been "celebrating" a "historic day in our country." She said he’d been surrounded by family.

She said that the mask mandate had "sent a message" to the public about the importance of mask-wearing.
"We take a number of Covid precautions here, as you know," Psaki continued. "I don't know that I have more for you on it than that."


Doocy pointed to a phrase Biden coined in his Inaugural address about leading "not merely by the example of our power but by the power of our example."
"Was that a good example for people watching?" Doocy asked.

"I think we have bigger issues to worry about at this moment in time," Psaki said.
