Re: Latest on the Corona Virus
Problem with your statement is that not everyone wants to "learn a skill to earn a higher wage".....they want to do the bare minimum with very little responsibility and expect that they will get a raise year after year for doing the same shit. I know a guy from high school here in my town that started as a Host (the person that seats people) at an Applebee's restaurant 13 YEARS AGO, and is still doing that SAME JOB (he is 34 years old). His raises have been "maxed out" because he has no added responsibility or skills, but he's fine with making $12.00/hr for the past 7-8 years because it's enough to pay for his "lifestyle" (no kids, no wife, lives with his brother, minimal loans/ credit, no college), in other words.......LAZY!
On the other hand, there are people like myself that started at $8.00/hr (as an office supply delivery guy), and learned things like our Point of Sales system and our inventory software, which allowed me to receive a substantial raise for that position. Then I went on to learn all about the office furniture we sell, and was quickly promoted to a Furniture installer with another raise. I continued to push myself to get better, and even created things like our "in-store calendar" that all the sales people, installers, warehouse people, and managers could log into to see what the delivery guys were doing on certain days between all of our locations (there was always double booking and lack of communication before this). Another raise quickly followed. Shortly after that, i was promoted to Install Manager where I learned the full scope of everything furniture related (CAD drawings, pricing, setups, repairs, going to HON and AllSteel classes, scheduling, etc)....guess what....another raise! Not long after that, I decided, with some goading by my uncle (the service manager), that I wanted to move over to the service department. Right off the bat, went to a half dozen Ricoh "instructor led training" sessions, and did hundreds of hours of online training, and jumped right into the field! You guessed it! Another Raise! After a year of proving that I can do the job and do it well, another raise came my way. After another year of Killing it and receiving great reviews, and hundreds more hours of in person learning and online training......BINGO......Another raise (a pretty good one!). During this time I was also learning the new EAutomate software we acquired, and learned how to fix numerous other devices like typewriters, timeclocks, adding machines, cash registers, shredders, folding machines, inserters, phone systems, computers, etc., along with networking skills......Who would've guessed it........A Big Ol' Fat Raise! Now I'm adding A Business Administration degree to my collection, and have been learning the Administrative side of things in our software and our company, and have added a TON more responsibility in my new role as Service Manager (managing multiple store locations' service departments, and the technicians at each location). Dare I say it?..........ANOTHER RAISE! LOL.
This has allowed me to live the lifestyle I want over the past 13 years (unlike my buddy "the host").
Even at $8.00 - $10.00/ hr I was able to raise my 1st kid, rent a house, buy my first truck (still have it), raise two dogs, support my wife's needs (she's a "homemaker"), and my "needs" (Beer), and still had a little to spare.
Now days, making what I make, after all the effort and the hard work I've put in......I comfortably support my wife's needs (still a homemaker), raise 3 kids, 3 dogs, a cat, bought a house, bought a couple other vehicles, a camper, a river vacation spot, many motorcycles, 4-wheelers, fishing gear, a boat, jet skis, savings accounts for my kids, paying for college classes for my wife and myself, vacations, BEER! etc. etc. All because I applied myself and wasn't some lazy piece of shit who expects a handout!
But, not everyone has that kind of work ethic or willingness to learn. That's where the problem is!
They are called "unskilled labor jobs" for a reason and the pay reflects that......it doesn't take any skill to flip a burger, or tape a box closed, or pull product off of an assembly line, or seat people at a restaurant!
Anyone who thinks they deserve more pay for something that a toddler can do, is just plain delusional and downright Stupid! It's not about "looking down on someone" as you say, it's about making people EARN their pay! And a lot of people just don't want to earn it! They want it handed to them. Fuck those People.
