US buys 100 million more doses of Moderna's coronavirus vaccine


The federal government plans to buy 100 million more doses of coronavirus vaccine from Moderna, the Health and Human Services Department said Friday.

“The purchase announced today brings the total doses of mRNA-1273 owned by the federal government to 200 million. Moderna began manufacturing the first 100 million doses while clinical trials were getting underway,” HHS said in a statement.

The US Food and Drug Administration is expected to issue emergency use authorization for Pfizer/BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine at any moment, and the federal government has denied reports it turned down an opportunity to buy 100 million extra doses of Pfizer’s vaccine last summer. Vaccine advisers to the FDA will meet next week to discuss an emergency use authorization for Moderna’s vaccine.

“If authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency use as outlined in agency guidance, doses of the vaccine will begin shipping immediately. The vaccine would be provided at no cost to Americans,” HHS said.

Both Moderna’s and Pfizer’s vaccines have been shown to be about 95% effective in preventing symptomatic infections. Moderna’s vaccine does not need to be kept as cold as Pfizer’s does during shipment and storage.

A record high number of Americans travelled during the recent Thanksgiving weekend ignoring CDC guidelines. COVID-19 infections and fatalities across the US is spiking upwards equivalent to the number of fatalities the US experienced (3,062) during 911 everyday.

Although the start of a distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine is imminent, it will be many months before the infection rate curve begins to flatten in what will surely become one of the darkest periods in US history.

NYC did flatten the first COVID-19 curve after many months of painful restrictions. Like many cities, states and countries the populace became complacent resulting in the pandemic roaring ahead for the next several months.

... the harsh reality for citizens of the world is that we cannot expect that a high tech, miracle vaccine will be the magic bullet that returns the world to pre-COVID-19. Masking, social distancing and proper hygiene will be with us for years to come.

Dr Fauci is not my hero. He is an American hero, on the side of all Americans, who's voice is attentively listened to around the world.

The NFL and all sports franchises will have to carefully re-evaluate the seating plans of their fans. Some fans will never return, some stadiums will likely operate at reduced capacity and some venues will require the wearing of masks.

There is every reason to hope that the 2021/2022 season will see a return to full league play after a certain % of the population gets vaccinated.

Who knows, maybe you will have to display a vaccination card to gain admittance to these private venues.
