Why are liquor stores essential? Again, we have no idea. Most folks simply adapt a herd mentality and don't ask questions.

... liquor stores are essential to gov't tax revenues. Somebody has to pay for all of these vaccines and PPE.

But chief among considerations for many governors and healthcare officers in each state are the dangers associated with detoxing from regular alcohol use without medical supervision. What's more, there is strong evidence that alcohol-related domestic violence can worsen if access to alcohol is denied or limited.

In short, liquor stores are often considered essential businesses because they prevent additional healthcare emergencies.

The reason liquor stores are essential is because alcoholics need to have an uninterrupted supply. Otherwise there would be a crush of people in the emergency room with alcohol withdrawal. Whether you accept it or not, it is a fact

US comes under pressure to share vaccines with rest of world

President Biden is under increasing pressure to share the U.S. vaccine stockpile with the rest of the world.

The federal government has been amassing doses, growing its supply into what will likely become a surplus, as the rest of the world struggles with shortages. The U.S. has purchased enough vaccines to immunize every adult in the country three times over.

The supply is likely to grow.

This week, Biden announced he had directed the administration to purchase an additional 100 million doses from Johnson & Johnson.

The White House said the extra doses could be a backstop for possible manufacturing issues, help vaccinate children, or serve as booster doses if they become necessary to fight against variants of the virus.

If finalized, the deal would not be fulfilled until the second half of the year, but would give the U.S. a total of 200 million shots from Johnson & Johnson, enough for 200 million people.

When asked at the White House event about the widening gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world, Biden acknowledged the global nature of the pandemic but said his goal is to bring COVID-19 under control in America first.

"This is not something that can be stopped by a fence, no matter how high you build a fence or a wall," Biden said. "So we're not going to be ultimately safe until the world is safe. We're going to start off making sure Americans are taken care of first, but we're then going to try to help the rest of the world."

"If we have a surplus, we're going to share it with the rest of the world," Biden added, noting that the U.S. has already committed $4 billion to COVAX, the World Health Organization-led program for distributing the vaccine across the world.

On Friday, Biden committed to working with the leaders of Australia, India and Japan to expand vaccine manufacturing and delivery in Asia. The new commitment is aimed at addressing shortages in vaccines in Southeast Asia.

Yet administration officials reiterated that the United States will not donate any vaccines until the full American population is inoculated, and did not say what threshold the country would set before considering exporting vaccines.

Experts and global health advocates think the U.S. has the ability to donate vaccines to other countries without significantly impacting their availability to Americans, but has been unwilling to make such a plan.

The global aid organization UNICEF, which is working with COVAX to deliver vaccines, has said countries that have vaccinated their own health workers and highest risk populations should share vaccine doses with other countries.

In the U.S., demand still outpaces supply, but that is beginning to change. States are opening up eligibility, and President Biden said he expects there will be enough supply for every American who wants a vaccine by the end of May.

During a speech Thursday evening, Biden said every adult will be able to sign up for a vaccine no later than May 1.

But pressure and frustration among allied countries is only growing after the administration said it has been keeping tens of millions of doses of a vaccine made by AstraZeneca in storage.

The Trump administration ordered 300 million doses of the vaccine, but issues with clinical trials have held up its authorization and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still waiting on additional data.

The vaccine has been authorized for emergency approval in the European Union, and is the primary vaccine being used by COVAX in poor countries. But even though it has not been authorized in the U.S., Biden administration officials said they are holding on to the supply.

"We're following the exact same process that we did with the other three now-approved vaccines; Moderna, Pfizer and J&J," Zients said.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the U.S. has rejected all requests from other countries to share doses of its vaccines.

"There have been requests around the world from a number of countries who have requested doses from the United States, but we have not provided doses from the U.S. government to anyone," Psaki said.

Psaki said the administration is trying to cover all contingencies and ensure Americans are getting put first.

There is also the distinct probability that Walmart and major alcoholic beverage breweries can afford to buy politicians. Local bike shop owners and micro brewery owners cannot.

Welp, it looks like the USA vaccines are the best. We'll come under more pressure to share.

Portugal and Spain join 15 European countries suspending roll-out of Oxford's AstraZeneca vaccine amid blood clot fears while Italy launches MANSLAUGHTER probe into death - but EU health chiefs back Boris in insisting the jab IS safe

                    • France, Italy, Spain and Germany joined a growing list of countries to suspend the use of Astrazeneca jab
                    • While reaching out to Russia, European countries have been rejecting British-made AstraZeneca jabs
                    • Russia has reached agreements with factories in Italy, Spain, France and Germany to make Sputnik V jabs
                    • Move comes despite Covid cases rising and lockdowns tightening in Italy, with Paris also facing tighter curbs
                    • Europe, the continent hardest hit by the pandemic, passed 40-million-case mark as news of jab bans broke

Portugal and Spain have joined 15 European countries in suspending the use of the AstraZeneca Covid jab over unproven fears it causes blood clots.
The moves comes despite scientists and the European Medicines Agency dismissing fears over clots, with warnings that the pausing of inoculations was 'reckless' and would have 'consequences'.
In an attempt to stem the tide of countries stopping the roll-out of the jab, the EMA insisted the rate of clots 'in vaccinated people seems not to be higher than that seen in the general population'.

The organisation, which is investigating the link between clots and the jab and will hold emergency meetings to discuss the safety of the jab tomorrow and Thursday, added that its benefits 'outweigh the risks of side effects'.
It last night insisted there was no reason to stop using the Oxford jab. The World Health Organisation, UK regulators and countries including Canada also gave their backing. Belgium's health ministry said it would continue using the jab because it was in a race against time to protect its population.
Whitehall sources claimed the suspensions were a 'cynical attempt to discredit' AstraZeneca in the wake of the bloc's row with the Anglo-Swedish drugs firm amid a shambolic rollout.
'I genuinely don't know what they are playing at,' said one insider. 'There is no data to support what they are doing. They just don't seem to be able to get over their disputes with AstraZeneca.
'But it is self-defeating because it is their own citizens who are missing out on a safe and effective vaccine at a time when Covid cases are rising.'
Among the 17million people across Europe who have received the vaccine there have been 37 reports of blood clots, which experts say is well below the expected level.
Boris Johnson and Nicola Sturgeon leapt to the defence of the jab yesterday, saying it is 'safe and effective' and no such side effects have been witnessed in the UK, which has used more doses than anywhere else in the world.
Attempts to quell safety concerns over the jab came after a host of European nations announced they would be pausing their roll-out of the Oxford vaccine.
Portugal and Spain are the latest countries to stop using the jab, following in the footsteps of France, Italy and Germany.
Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Slovenia and Bulgaria are the other European countries to have suspending AstraZeneca's vaccine.

Meanwhile, Austria, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Romania have stopped the use of one batch of the jab.
Australian MP Matt Canavan said last night that he wants the country to follow the 17 European nations and stop using the vaccine.
Italian prosecutors on Monday also launched a manslaughter probe after a music teacher died at the weekend just one day after receiving AstraZeneca's jab. The judiciary in Biella, a city in the north of the nation, opened a preliminary probe into 57-year-old Sandro Tognatti's death to decide whether there is a case to answer.
Germany's health minister said the decision to suspend AstraZeneca shots was taken on the advice of the country's vaccine regulator, the Paul Ehrlich Institute, which called for further investigation into seven cases of clots in the brains of people who had been vaccinated.
French President Emmanuel Macron said his country will likewise suspend shots until at least Tuesday afternoon. Italy's drug regulator announced a temporary ban, less than 24 hours after saying the 'alarm' over the vaccine was unjustified. And Spain said it will stop using the vaccine for two weeks while experts review its safety.
News of the bans comes as Europe, the continent hardest hit by the pandemic, passed the 40-million-case mark today.
This is just the latest episode in a long-running saga between the EU and drug-maker AstraZeneca over its vaccine, which has seen the bloc accuse the UK-based firm of nationalism, impose export bans on its jabs, and reopen old wounds with recently-departed Brexit Britain.

Meanwhile, Italy will begin a new lockdown today, Paris is facing tighter measures as cases overwhelm hospitals, and German ICU doctors say an 'immediate' return to lockdown is necessary.
Covid cases are also rising sharply in countries such as Sweden, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and non-EU member Serbia as experts warn that a third wave has begun.

Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.

The CDC is in the process of re writing all of the Trump era guidelines it was forced to publish based upon facts, real data and science.

The Trump era injected political considerations into what should have been a strictly scientific approach. This damaged the CDC's reputation and now under CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, MD all guidelines are being carefully reviewed.
