Re: The Shining City Upon a Hill

                Trevor Noah’s jokes hit home

Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was memorable for what, in all probability, won’t happen after the event.

No one got ribbed so badly that they’re likely to mount a campaign for office, call on their followers to march to a federal building or refuse to concede after losing an election.

Steven Portnoy, the association’s president, reminded guests that Donald Trump is thought to have launched his White House run after being skewered at the dinner in 2011. He then asked guests at the table where the now-former President was seated that year to promise just to laugh.

The annual dinner – the highpoint of Washington’s social calendar – was also notable for what didn’t happen: Unlike this year’s Oscars ceremony, no one was so offended by jokes from the headliner act that they got out of their seats and hit him.

Comedian Trevor Noah did memorably express fear however that a joke about Trump White House counselor Kellyanne Conway might provoke her husband to take the stage to thank him. (George Conway, a prominent attorney in town, is notorious for brutally and publicly criticizing his wife’s former boss.)

During his four years in office, Trump mercilessly attacked the press, refusing to attend the annual bash at which America’s Fourth Estate fetes its luminaries and celebrates its own accomplishments. For two years, the event was canceled because of the pandemic, pausing a nearly century-long Washington tradition.

Saturday’s reboot of the dinner helped restore a sense of civility and normalcy to life in the United States capital – even as the specter of Covid-19 continues to hang over it.

The event was held on the heels of the April 2 Gridiron Club dinner, where many of the attendees tested positive for the coronavirus afterward. Noah joked that Saturday night’s swank dinner was “the nation’s most distinguished superspreader event.”

Attendees in the packed ballroom of more than 2,000 journalists, celebrities, politicians and Washington insiders were doubtless hoping Saturday that they will not repeat that debacle.

The return of the dinner reaffirmed the important fact that we now have a President who respects the press and can take some heat. (President Joe Biden even confirmed to Noah he wouldn’t go to jail for roasting him.)

In his speech, Biden recognized that the dinner was happening with “disinformation massively on the rise, where the truth is buried by lies and the lies live on as truth.”

If it was not due the scheming of Mitch McConnell to influence the selection of Supreme Court judges during President Obama's administration and the unexpected death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg women's rights would not be in such peril in the USA.

Why does a woman have to bring an unborn to life if she is the unwilling victim of rape, incest or at risk of death to herself if the unborn is delivered?

The Supreme Court has not formalized their verdict so it is a little too early to count your chickens that Roe will be overturned.

One thing is for sure, if the Supreme Court does reject Roe vs Wade, many more millions of US voters will be mobilized to remove Republicans from political office.

... if Roe is overturned this is both religious and Christian extremism. Protests are occurring across the country.

Abortion benefits both women and men. it benefits Democrats, Republicans, Independents and people of all races and color.

... there are many, many stories where a woman uses birth control pills, condoms and monthly timing and she still gets unintentionally pregnant.

In the repressive states of Texas and Oklahoma where abortion is now illegal after six weeks, a woman is often not even aware she is pregnant at that time.

... an unexpected and unwanted pregnancy can ruin a woman's life and economic opportunities for many years thereafter.

President Biden says administration is on track to reduce deficit, which he predicts will reduce inflationary pressures

President Biden said his administration will reduce the deficit by what he called a record amount on Wednesday, the same day the Federal Reserve was widely expected to raise interest rates by half a percentage point, the biggest single move in 22 years.

“This week, my administration released new information that we're on track to cut the federal deficit by another $1.5 trillion by the end of this fiscal year, the biggest decline in a single year ever in American history,” Biden said in remarks from the Roosevelt Room. “Why is it important?

Because bringing down the deficit is one way to ease inflationary pressures.”

“We reduce federal borrowing, and we help combat inflation,” he said.

Throughout his remarks, Biden attacked Republicans as the “MAGA Republicans,” as well as the Trump administration, which he said “increased the deficit every year was in office, in part because of a reckless $2 trillion tax cut.”

Biden said that he "love[s] it" when Republicans talk about the deficit.

“I don't want to hear Republicans talking about deficits and their ultra-MAGA agenda,” he said. “I want to hear about fairness. I want to hear about decency ... about helping ordinary people. The bottom line is that for decades, the trickle-down economics has failed.”
