Americans continue to feel better about inflation and the economy

Some of the world’s biggest economies are defying warnings of a slowdown despite still-high inflation and painful interest rate hikes. Oil traders are betting that resilient economies will translate into robust demand, and that, with interest rates nearing their peak, the outlook for growth could improve.

The US economy grew by 2.4% in the second quarter. That was a faster pace than in the first three months of the year and was also above economists’ expectations for growth of 1.8%, according to Refinitiv.

US consumers have been feeling a whole lot better this summer as inflation has continued to slow.

Consumer sentiment tracked by the University of Michigan rose 11% in July from the prior month, reaching its highest level since October 2021, according to a final reading of the month’s data. That’s a huge improvement from June 2022, when consumer sentiment fell to its lowest level on record and inflation reached a four-decade high of 9.1%.

Americans’ expectations for inflation rates in the year ahead inched up to a 3.4% rate, “well below the high point of 5.4% from April 2022 but above the 2.3%-3.0% range seen in the two years prior to the pandemic,” according to a release.

The Department of Energy said on Thursday it is accepting applications from states and territories for $8.5 billion in rebate programs for upgrades in U.S. homes that aim to lower energy bills and increase energy efficiency.

The rebates for items including insulation, heat pumps, and efficient appliances will be available to consumers after states and territories apply for and get funds from the department. The two rebate programs were funded by President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act that fellow Democrats in Congress passed last year without a single Republican vote.

... the heat pumps and appliances should have an embossed label on them saying paid for in part by President Biden.

That should twist a few Republican voters into a knot. Do they take the rebate or not?
