New Tax on Number of Miles You Drive? Incoming Transportation Secretary Buttigieg Likes the Idea

America desperately needs to upgrade its infrastructure including roads. Highway taxes have not been raised since 1993. As vehicles become more fuel efficient, more people are driving less due to working from home, more people are using home delivery services for shopping and electric vehicles become more common, traditional gas tax revenues will continue to fall. The national Highway Trust fund does not have enough funding and is going insolvent.

The idea of taxing miles driven is just a concept that requires Congressional approval.

In Canada, for every litre of gas we purchase, we pay an extra carbon tax at the pump. The higher cost of gasoline is an incentive to some to drive less while helping to protect the environment. When it is time to file your annual income tax return, many people receive a carbon tax credit on the gasoline that they purchased.

Re: The Shining City Upon a Hill

In a new twist, Taiwan uses missiles (aka armed drones) to respond to China's regular intervention into it's airspace.

China provokes Taiwan on a continuous basis to respond to incursions into its airspace. The desired effect is to weaken the airframes and exhaust Taiwanese pilots with constant sorties.

The Biden Presidency has fully committed to make available to Taiwan, a major global electronics manufacturer, the resources that it needs to preserve its independence from China.

In a sign of support for Taiwan, the island's de-facto ambassador to Washington, Hsiao Bi-khim, was an invited guest at President Biden's inauguration.

Biden lifts Pentagon's ban on transgender people serving in military

Trump put the ban in place that did not allow transgender people to serve.

President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that lifts the Pentagon's ban on transgender people serving in the military. It had been put in place by the Trump administration.
At a signing ceremony in the Oval Office, Biden said the order reinstates "a position that the previous commanders and, as well, as the secretaries have supported."

"What I'm doing is enabling all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform and essentially restoring the situation that used to be before, where transgender personnel -- if qualified in every other way -- can serve their government in the United States military," he added.

New Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley joined Biden at the signing Monday.

"I fully support the President's direction that all transgender individuals who wish to serve in the United States military and can meet the appropriate standards shall be able to do so openly and free from discrimination," Austin said in a statement.

"This is the right thing to do," the statement continued. "It is also the smart thing to do."

The controversial ban was announced by former President Donald Trump in 2017 through a tweet. It reversed an Obama administration policy that allowed open service by transgender people.

Under Biden's new executive order, all individuals who identify as transgender will be allowed to serve openly and to enter the military services in their self-identified gender.

This revised policy will also ensure all medically necessary transition-related care authorized by law is available to all service members and will re-examine all cases of transgender service members who may be in the midst of some form of adverse administrative proceedings.

"They can shoot as straight as anybody else can shoot," President Biden added.

"I am elated that the approximately 15,000 transgender service members proudly serving across the globe can rest easier knowing that their service to our nation is seen, valued and that they can continue to serve as their authentic selves," said Marine Corps Capt. Emma Shinn, president of SPART*A, an organization that represents active duty transgender service members.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez to Introduce Resolution to Expel Marjorie Taylor Greene From Congress

Democratic California Representative Jimmy Gomez is introducing a resolution to expel Republican Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Congress for her past social media posts calling for violence against Democratic politicians and promotion of allegedly extremist conspiracy theories.

"Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has previously supported social media posts calling for political violence against the Speaker of the House, members of Congress, and former President Barack Obama," Gomez said in a statement on Wednesday.

Gomez said Greene's "advocacy for extremism and sedition" merits an immediate expulsion from Congress as well as strong and clear condemnation from Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and her other GOP colleagues.

"Her very presence in office represents a direct threat against the elected officials and staff who serve our government," Gomez continued, "and it is with their safety in mind as well as the security of institutions and public servants across our country, that I call on my House colleagues to support my resolution to immediately remove Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene from this legislative body."

In addition to liking social media posts supporting the Satanic cannibal pedophile conspiracy theory known as QAnon and claiming that Parkland and other school shootings were staged events to help ban guns nationwide, Greene has also liked a comment which said "a bullet to the head would be quicker" than removing Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California.

Why isn't Maxine Waters being being expelled?

... Maxine never verbalized shooting someone in the head for political gain.

Surely, you can agree that this is far out of bounds and dangerous behaviour for a Congressman.

Re: The Shining City Upon a Hill

President Joe Biden spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, the first phone call between the two since Biden took office last week, the White House confirmed.

"President Biden made clear that the United States will act firmly in defense of its national interests in response to actions by Russia that harm us or our allies," the White House said in a statement. "The two presidents agreed to maintain transparent and consistent communication going forward."

Biden discussed a five-year extension to New START, the strategic arms reduction treaty, "agreeing to have their teams work urgently to complete the extension by February 5," the White House said. Biden also reaffirmed the U.S.'s "firm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty," raised concerns over the Solar Winds hack on the federal government that has been linked by U.S. officials to Russia, and media reports of Russia placing bounties on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

In addition, Biden raised the issue of 2020 election interference and the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny.

... President Biden made it clear that Russia will no longer be permitted to control the narrative on global affairs. The ex-President was perceived too often as being sympathetic to Russia's attempts to undermine the USA.
