The White House said Wednesday that President Biden has a "range of options" that he can choose from to respond to new Russian-linked cyberattacks, but the president hasn't yet decided whether to take action.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One Wednesday that Biden had not decided on a course of action for responding to the ransomware attack on software company Kaseya and other potential attacks last week, there would be more to come.
"In terms of operational considerations, obviously it is not in our interest to preview those, or preview our punches as I like to say. The president has a range of options should he determine to take action," Psaki said.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the Biden administration had yet to attribute the ransomware attack to any particular actor or country, though cybersecurity experts have linked it to the Russian-based "REvil" cyber criminal group. This is the same organization the FBI linked to the ransomware attack in May on JBS USA, the nation's largest beef provider.
Kaseya announced Tuesday that while the attack had been "limited," it had hit dozens of the company's customers, which provided services to up to 1,500 companies, many of which were small businesses. It is believed to be one of the largest ransomware attacks in history.
Biden and Vice President Harris huddled with administration officials Wednesday morning to discuss how to curb ransomware attacks before departing for a trip to Illinois to promote his economic agenda. Representatives from the Department of Homeland Security and the intelligence community were also present, according to comments Psaki made Tuesday.
Asked by a reporter about his message to Vladimir Putin on cyber as he departed the White House, Biden responded: "I will deliver it to him."Comment

Biden’s move to lower drug prices by allowing imports of cheaper drugs from other countries was part of his health care plan during his presidential campaign.
Before Friday, the Biden administration would point to congressional efforts on lowering drug pricing, which involves legislation to allow the secretary of Health and Human Services to negotiate lower prices.
The new order directs the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to work with states on importing prescription drugs from Canada, and directs officials to develop a plan to lower drug prices in 45 days. Biden on Friday noted that a “handful” of companies control the market for vital medicines.
“As a result, Americans pay two and a half times more for prescription drugs than in any other leading country,” he said.
The order also issues new rules so hearing aids can be sold over the counter. Hearing aids can cost thousands of dollars and can’t be sold in pharmacies.
“That’s something the last administration was supposed to get done but didn’t do. We’re going to get it done,” Biden said.Comment

... like so many things the ex President said, it was all just political theatre. Something to say at a rally with no real widespread benefits actually happening.
President Donald Trump claimed he helped lower the price of insulin to be as cheap as water.
In reality, many Americans still pay hundreds of dollars a month for insulin depending on their insurance coverage, health experts said.
Trump may have been referring to when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced a $35 cap on copays for insulin in May for some Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans. The Trump administration estimated the cap would save seniors $446 on average, and that the manufacturers would endure an added $250 million in costs.
But Anne Swerlick, a senior policy analyst at the Florida Policy Institute, said the insulin cap was mostly just “political theatre,” and barely scratched the surface of the much larger, systemic issue of inflated drug pricing.
The companies that provide insulin to Medicare users at the $35 price point are still making more from other patients who use the drug. Each of the three drug companies - Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk and Sanofi - make billions in revenue every year, according to the news source Axios. And the capped copay is still a voluntary plan for manufacturers.
“The system is extraordinarily fragmented and people are going to fall through the cracks,” Swerlick said.
The least expensive form of insulin a diabetic patient could get may cost between $25 to $75 at a place like Walmart, said Dr. Henry Rodriguez, the clinical director of the University of South Florida Diabetes Center. The kind of insulin they can get there, which isn’t modified to either act rapidly or be long-acting through the day, means patients would have to follow strictly regimented eating schedules to make sure they don’t face low blood sugar, Rodriguez said.
The more expensive modified insulins that afford diabetic patients more freedom in their lives and are often preferred by physicians, can be more difficult to access, he said. For an uninsured patient, it could cost between $500 to $1,000 a vial, and patients may need anywhere from one to three vials a month.

“I think it’s important to remember that almost all of the Trump administration’s rule-making in this context is restricted to the Medicare program,” Rachel Sachs, a professor at the Washington University in St. Louis’ School of Law who has written about several of the administration’s proposals, told us. So, a “fairly small number of Americans” would be affected by the policies.
About 63 million Americans, or 19% of the population, are enrolled in Medicare.Comment

That would be no different than what Obama said when he was in office. He said that Obamacare would lower healthcare cost. It went up. A lot. He said that if you liked you doctor that you could keep him. That wasn't true for many. He also made grand promises about global warming, shovel ready jobs, ect.
And guess what? All the stuff that Biden is saying is more of the same. How much of what Biden has said have you fallen for? Any of it?Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.Comment

... except this time US citizens will begin to actually enjoy lower drug prescription costs more in line with the rest of the world. A huge opportunity for Canadian drug manufacturers.
No need for US citizens to pay on average 2.5x what I would pay for prescription drugs unless you like to defend American drug companies profits.Comment
