Reminds me of the mid 1960s when a number of unions got the US Government to shutdown the Bracero Program. Where I lived we had a melon shed that packed cantaloupe for shipment to distributors. They operated from sunrise until after sunset. Spotters had been out a couple of hours earlier deciding which fields would be ready to harvest The pickers worked "piece work." I.e. they got paid according to how much weight they picked minus the percentage of culls in the load when processed at the shed. They had food and housing provided so had few expenses. By the end of the season they want home to their families and lived like royalty.
Most of the crop was harvested with the exception of the melons that were either too large or too small. Many of those were taken by culling crews to be sold to cattle and sheep ranches.
The first year after the Bracero Program ended union workers worked 8 hour days and only 5 days a week. Over 50% of the crops ended up rotting in the fields. Prices skyrocketed. The last year of the Bracero Program, I could buy a crate of 50 cantaloupe picked that day for $1.00. The next year it cost that much for one cantaloupe in the grocery store and lord knows how many days they took to reach the store.Comment
