    Britain bends the knee

Britain Reportedly Willing to Roll Back Tech Censorship to Avoid Trump Trade War

The leftist British government is reportedly willing to walk back some of draconian online censorship rules to avoid falling into a trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to a report from The Telegraph, Downing Street is looking at reworking the Online Safety Act passed under the previous Tory government in 2023 for fear that punishing American tech companies may draw the ire of President Trump.

Free speech is important to Americans. I understand that free speech isn't a right in Canada. But it is here. We fight for it.

No, Canadians don't value free speech. That's why a comedian was arrested for telling a joke. That would never happen here in the USA.

No, sir. This thread is about free speech. We have it, Canada doesn't. Trump might get Canada more of it like he did Britain. Keep your fingers crossed. Your little country needs all of they can get.

Although your knowledge of Canada is improving, it is still lacking in most areas. Keep up the good work though, I would never discourage anyone from learning. Bravo

Lets put it out here for you to see. We already know that a Comedian can go to jail,.

You’ll often hear Canadians talking about their fundamental right to free speech. But, as with many Canadian misconceptions, this is a case of them mistaking themselves for Americans.

Yes, “freedom of expression” is guaranteed by our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but there’s a pretty big loophole nobody mentions. The preamble to the Charter explicitly mentions that this freedom is subject to “reasonable limits.”

There’s also the other part of the Charter where provincial governments can steamroll any freedom they want, provided they publicly announce that they’re doing so.

This is all very different from the US, where you just have the First Amendment.

But in Canada, it means that you can get fined or even go to jail based on something you say. Say something on Twitter that “wilfully promotes hatred” and you could go to jail for two years.

That only matters if one wants to "willfully promote hatred". Most Canadians don't, unlike about 30% of the US.

Dummy, use your brain. Who decides what hate is? According to liberals, misgendering is hate. A joke is considered hate.

Well, you have all the answers I guess. None of what you seem extremely concerned about affects 99% of the population.
It only affects those who want to use hate to belittle others and then claim innocence.
                        Maybe that's you, I don't know.

Tell that to the comedian. In Canada, the government's job is to keep folks from being offended. Grow a pair.

Aww, that poor comedian who was charged by a conservative government and released by a liberal government. Is that the one?

If Canada is gonna have these ridiculous laws, at least apply them equally. That means that you can't offend religious folks. Are you for that? I doubt it, because you'd be in jail.
