The Trump administration’s sweeping cuts to the federal workforce are impacting Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge has lost two park rangers, a quarter of its staff.
Brier Ryver oversaw permits, including one to bring people with developmental disabilities into the refuge, and was in the middle of teaching students about springs restoration when the news came down about the job termination.
“I want people to know that we were important,” said Ryver, 26. “We were working hard trying to do what we felt was right: connecting people to the environment, and protecting this place. It was not wasteful.”
