... US diesel refineries are working at 102% of capacity. US refinery capacity has not expanded in decades.

The last time a new refinery was opened in the USA with significant output capacity was the Marathon factory in Garysville, Louisiana in 1977 with an output capacity of 585,000 bpd!

A new small refinery was opened this year in Texas but only has an output capacity of 45,000 bpd.

The USA has 130 refineries in total down from a peak of 300 refineries in 1965.

The USA actually lacks the refining capacity to process light, sweet shale oil. Most shale oil is exported to be processed elsewhere.

The older refineries which dominate the US can mostly only process the heavier crude oil imports from places like Saudi Arabia that they were designed for in the 1960s.

Diesel production in the USA has actually surpassed last year at about 5M bpd compared to the same time last year at about 4.6M bpd.

Diesel demand in the USA sits at amount 4.1M bpd. Where has this excess gone?

The USA is exporting 1.3M bpd of diesel, mostly to Europe, because the demand is there which equals higher prices and higher profits for energy traders.

The USA has lots of diesel oil in stock and any reductions in costs would only profit the energy traders who control the world's markets
