(CNN)The House select committee investigating January 6, 2021, is considering asking the Justice Department to pursue at least three criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The criminal charges being considered include obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the federal government, and insurrection. The referral recommendations will be presented at a committee meeting on Monday.
The final committee report could include additional charges proposed for Trump, according to the source. It will provide justification from the committee's investigation for recommending the charges.Comment

York(CNN)The Biden administration announced plans Friday to provide nearly 2 million barrels of oil to refineries through an emergency exchange and simultaneously begin efforts to replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve early next year.
The new emergency exchange is aimed at addressing "potential supply disruptions" caused by the shutdown of the Keystone Pipeline due to a leak earlier this month, the Energy Department said. Part of that key pipeline remains shuttered and no timeline has been issued for a full reopening.
Emergency exchanges allow oil refineries to borrow oil from the SPR for a short period due to supply disruptions such as hurricanes or pipeline outages. Unlike with emergency sales such as the record-setting release of 180 million barrels announced in March, this oil must be returned.Comment

CNN)A federal judge in Florida on Wednesday denied former President Donald Trump's request to block the New York attorney general's office from seeking materials from his private trust.
Judge Donald Middlebrooks ruled that the attorney general's office "raises four reasons -- all of which are likely correct -- why Plaintiff has no substantial likelihood of success on the merits."
Among them, the judge said it is not obvious that Florida's trust laws were "intended to reach government officials lawfully bringing enforcement actions for alleged fraud."Comment

(CNN)Congress has passed a measure aimed at making it harder to overturn a certified presidential election, a major moment that marks the first legislative response to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol and then-President Donald Trump's relentless pressure campaign to stay in power despite his 2020 loss.
The legislation, which would overhaul the 1887 Electoral Count Act, was included as part of a massive $1.7 trillion government funding bill that the Senate passed on Thursday and the House passed on Friday. It will now go to President Joe Biden to be signed into law.
The measure to overhaul the Electoral Count Act would clarify that the vice president's role in overseeing the electoral result certification in Congress is strictly ceremonial. It would raise the threshold to make it harder for lawmakers to force votes attempting to overturn a state's certified result. Additionally, it includes provisions that would prevent efforts to pass along fake electors to Congress.Comment

(CNN)Republican leader Kevin McCarthy suffered a third rebuke for speaker before the House adjourned Tuesday evening.
Twenty Republicans voted against him -- an increase from the 19 defections in the first two rounds of balloting. McCarthy, who needed 218 votes, had failed to secure the speaker's gavel by the third round, earning 202 votes in the final tally.
All 20 voted for Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who himself voted for McCarthy. Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, who had initially voted for McCarthy in the first two rounds, shifted his support to Jordan.

Leaving the floor Tuesday, Jordan told CNN there is "no" chance he will become speaker, adding he wants to be House Judiciary chairman. He said he would lobby his colleagues to back McCarthy once the chamber resumes Wednesday.
Here are the lawmakers who voted against McCarthy on the third ballot:

Rep. Dan Bishop
Rep. Lauren Boebert
Rep. Josh Brecheen
Rep. Michael Cloud
Rep. Andrew Clyde
