Re: Stop being a little bitch

I want to give a little update.

This has a been a learning experience for me. I've learned that while I can still do a lot things in my 50's that I used to do in my 20's & 30's...it's not always wise to do so. At least not without taking precautions. Our muscles aren't as elastic in our later years. That's a fact that I learned the hard way.

I had never taken stretching seriously and it had never been a problem when I was young. But I sustained 2 injuries -groin & elbow- and 1 of 'em was related to failing to properly stretch, in my opinion. At least partly. The elbow injury was due to trying to lift too much weight.

I decided to take 3-weeks off from running and lifting and the rest has done wonders. The elbow injury was very painful and it's pain free at the moment. The groin injury seems to come and go but it's much, much better. Hopefully another week's rest does the trick. I miss running.

The biggest plus to taking time off is that I incorporated a regimented stretching routine. This stretching routine isn't what you may think. It's hard work and pain is involved. It has some yoga concepts. The pain is real and it fucks with my mind. You have to hold the poses for about 30-seconds and I've learned that breathing in and out very slowly helps. Don't ask me why.

Already, I'm more flexible and it's only been a few weeks. I hope to get to where I'm super flexible but we'll see....

You might want to check-out Denise Austin workout videos for men over 50 on YouTube. Her Stretch & Flex is good for the days that you are not running. Try running only 3 days a week, slowly trying to increase distance and reduce the time needed to do 2 miles. See if you can adapt some of the stretches to do before running.

I've been sitting here trying to remember where I've heard that name. Then I remembered she had a show on ESPN back in the day that came on super early in the morning. Denise Austin. What a blast from the past. I'll check it out.

I was gonna wait a few more days before running again but my legs felt good so I decided to take a 1-mile run. It was nice to run completely pain free. I've adjusted my running style by widening my stance and making sure my foot strikes are landing more towards the front of the foot. So far, so good. The real test will be after running 6-days a week for about a month.

This is true. But you can slow it down.

Re: Stop being a little bitch

I woke up at 3 a.m., couldn't sleep. It seems like forever since I had been in the gym, but today was my target date to return. Since I couldn't sleep, it was the perfect time as they gym would be almost empty. When I walked in the door, there were only 2 people there. And one of them was on the treadmill.

This journey back to fitness has been a monumental one for me. I was really out of shape. My goal isn't merely to get back into shape, but to get into elite shape for my age. That means adding muscle and getting to 10% body fat.

I've made some mistakes along the way but I've learned from them and am doing my best not to repeat them or make any new mistakes.

I reduced the weight I am lifting. That means more reps to get to failure with a lower weight. I'm okay with that if it means no injuries. There will come a time to increase the weight but I was pushing it too fast. I must understand that this is not a race against time. I'm always in a hurry it seems. I need to slow down and have done so.

This is month 5 of my fitness journey and I'm in much better shape and I've dropped a lot of weight. About 40lbs.

The stretching program that I'm on has helped a lot. I'm also warming up in the gym with light sets to get the blood flowing before I add any real weight.

I still wonder if I can keep this up for a lifetime. It's a lot of work and requires dedication. I think if I can make it for one full year that I can do it.

Re: Stop being a little bitch

I just finished my ever evolving stretching routine. As I my knowledge of YOGA continues to increase, the more I understand what is required to gain flexibility. In the past when I would hear the word "Yoga", I immediately equated that as something girls do. I thought it was something that required little effort. As they say, ignorance is bliss.

I'm pretty sure YOGA could be used in place of water boarding to get a terrorist to talk. I'm only half joking. On the video that I'm following along with, he says to hold each pose for 2-minutes with a pain threshold of about 7. This is painful. 2-minutes seems like 2-hours.

I've read up on the science of muscle stretching/contraction and the brain tells our central nervous system to not let our muscles stretch too far to protect us from injury. But through proper breathing and learning to go slow and let our body become a "wet noodle", so to speak, we can increase flexibility day by day.

I still have a lot to learn. A whole lot.

                        Thought I'd give a little update. ]

With all the little injuries piling up over the past 4-months, I knew I wasn't doing something right and change was needed. What I discovered is that the mistakes were many. My running form was all wrong. I corrected that but both of my groin muscles were jacked up. More on that in a bit.

I also had an injury to my right elbow and shoulder to a lessor degree. Fortunately none of the injuries were serious. But they did require attention. The most serious injury was to my left groin. I tried resting it for a couple of weeks and it helped, but I could still feel pain. I knew it wasn't right. As a result, I'm no longer running. I'm only walking until it completely heals. It's getting better every day. I'm learning patience...which has never been my strong suit.

The other major mistake I was making was trying to lift too much weight. My form was breaking down and that was the reason for the right arm injury. I'm lucky I didn't injury myself worse. I think I was trying to work out my ego instead of my muscles. I've corrected that and my body feels much, much, MUCH better.

I also incorporated a stretching routine but I've talked about that already. I always get it figured out.....EVENTUALLY. I'm lucky I didn't hurt myself worse. At 55 years old, there's no use being a damn fool.

Ignored those minor pulls and tissue injuries around joints at 55 can lead to full blown arthritis as you get older. Also when doing stretching do not forget the plantar tendons on the bottoms of the feet. Plantar Fasciitis heel pain can make your first few steps in the morning quite painful.

I'm aware that there's injury risk. However, I'm trying my best to educate myself to prevent these injuries. In the end, I've determined that the reward is greater than the risk.

It's been 5-months of living in a calorie deficit. Through my studies, I learned the science behind being hungry. Hunger is one reason that humans have survived for this long. Hunger is baked in our genetics. It's perfectly normal for humans to over-eat. Why? Because 100,000 years ago, food wasn't everywhere like it is today. Humans would go for long periods of time without eating, so when they did eat, they needed to eat as much as possible and hopefully build up some fat to be used as energy when there was no food.

But that's a problem in today's world. Food is everywhere but our our bodies still tell us to eat as much as possible. That's one reason for obesity. There's also the processed food that is calorie dense.

Now that we understand the science, what do we do about it? Will power? Forget about it. Hunger will always win out eventually.

In my opinion, you're better off not staying hungry. That means eating enough to not be hungry. The trick is to eat food that will fill you up but is low in calories. Veggies are a mainstay. But it's not easy. I'm 5-months into this. I've lost 40 lbs. Has it gotten any easier after 5-months? Not really. I think about food a lot. Mainly the food that I can't have. Soon, I won't have to live in a calorie deficit as I will go into maintaining my ideal body weight? That's not much easier. I blame it on our DNA.

I remember G Gordon Liddy talking to a caller who asked why he couldn't lose weight and in fact seemed to be gaining even though he ran every morning and was on a very strict diet. The G man's answer had to do with the fact that humans are biologically hunter/gatherers. When you go out and run or exercise extensive before breakfast and then have a diet meal, the body thinks 'the hunting and gathering must be really bad right now, I better save as many calories as I can. On the other hand, if you come back and have a hearty breakfast of meat, good hunting, and some type of bread and/or potatoes, good gathering, you will loose weight.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should not be skimped on. However breakfast does not really mean the morning meal. It means "breaking the fast." For someone working "graveyard or Morning tower" (midnight to 8 AM) then it would be the meal they have before leaving for work.

The obesity problem of today has to do with far to many eating a huge evening meal and then going to bed within 3 or 4 hours. The only thing that the body can do with those calories is store them as fat.
