Never used it (yet!) but from what I've read, it's driver-compatible with Vista (which, in turn, was mostly printer-driver-compatible with XP).

    But I could be wrong...

Been using Linux on all my computers for years. Much better than Vista, XP, 2k, Me (like anything could be worse), 98, 95, and 3.1 put together.

Have not found anything I can't do with open source software except edit a .pub file. But I can export pub to a .ps file and import it with Scribus (Runs on Windows, Mac, and *nix) which is a much better program anyway, and its free.

I'm interested to see what Win7 has to offer, but I'm not interested in paying that much money to Microsoft.

I would love to be able to run Mac OS X, but I can't afford the hardware - Apple would do well to open up the platform.

Microsoft better have a spectacular OS with Win7 because they pissed off too many people with Vista

I'm a Vista user and my biggest complaint about the OS in not about the OS itself, but the fact that MS made it mandatory the upgrade to Vista in order to use DirectX 10 (I'm a gamer, and if it wasn't for that, I'd still be using XP). It was a nice way of sticking Vista down my throat - and I'm not convinced when they say that it was the only way to do DX10!

Besides that, Vista is an OK OS - just like XP, just a wee bit heavier on the hardware. Not good, but not bad either.

I've been using it since the beta days and I have to say I'm impressed. Best Windows OS so far. I have tried several different printer models (from different manufacturers) with Windows 7 and have had no real issues so far. Vista drivers will work in most cases.

Shadow, you should have gotten in during the Windows 7 RC time period (too bad it closed off on August 20th: Windows 7 Release Candidate Downloads End August 20th - Springboard Series Blog - The Windows Blog ). Free and would work through June 1st of next year. Plenty of time to kick the tires and test it out and see if you like it. As to YHEL23's original post, I've been using the RC for some time now, and have the RTM (final version essentially, see this post for explanation on how I have it: When will you get Windows 7 RTM? - Windows 7 Team Blog - The Windows Blog ) in my hands, but haven't had the time to install it yet. For the most part if you can't find a Windows 7 specific driver for a device, usually the Vista version of the driver will do. There are exceptions, but they will work 95% of the time. There are advantages to using Windows 7 specific drivers though. Better memory management, better device integration (Windows 7 Device stage is actually very useful) and other reasons. Also, Windows 7 tends to use less system resources when compared with Vista, so this is definitely a good trend. If you actually do run into any problems with it (I haven't yet in my few months using it, short of a lack of native drivers now and then, but that is manufacturer dependant), then you could also post to Microsoft's official Windows 7 Support Forum located here Windows 7 Category . A lot of the system engineers and software developers for Windows go through those forums, so you can get som good answers if you provide them with the information they need.

I had thought about getting the RC, but decided it was too much of a hassle - I got the RC for XP and it was such a pain when it expired.

I am starting to see a lot of "Ready for Win7" hardware out there, but that is not surprising since the OS seems to be less of a hog than Vista. Of course even XP is a hog compared to Linux but that's the nature of the beast. I only have 3Gb of ram in my computer, but I still never hit the Virtual Memory, even when running a VirtualBox session of Vista (testing for web development) Dreamweaver (through Wine) Acrobat, OpenOffice, Thunderbird, and several FireFox windows open at the same time. Plus 4 threads of Boinc applications (Rosetta project and SETI@home) running in the background.

I just haven't been impressed with Windows since XP SP2, and really 98 might still be better if they continued to release patches. Vista sold out to DRM, and got in the way all the time with the UAC constantly asking "Are You Sure Your Sure?"

As far as Windows goes, I think that XP was the ultimate Windows version. IMHO, one of the troubles MS had with Vista was that XP was too good an OS. With the previous versions, there was always something wrong or missing that people thought "Heck, maybe the next version fixes it!" and that ended with XP - come on, can anyone really point something that XP is missing that Vista - and 7 - fixed or added (not counting artificially exclusive features like DX10)?

Try and play a BlueRay without certified hardware. Possible yes, but you shouldn't have to hack your system or spend extra $$$ to watch a movie.
