The state of education is awful and getting worser (sic). be grateful that you don't listen to the news on Troy public radio. The female announcer has so many problems pronounciating the news that it becomes painfull to listen too, and her sentences are so disjointed, you're not sure what the news actually was.

One day the American education system will be great again. Once the politicians make it a priority, finance it properly, and get rid of the No kid left behind crap. stretch the kids mentally, expect more from them, and don't teach to the lowest mental level of the class, and this country will once more be the envy of the world academically.
Sorry folks, reputation removed by Just Manuals, because he's a sad little wanker

        Finance it properly...

In the great state of Mississippi (Leake and surrounding counties) the public school gets a grand total of $6500 per student per year to poorly educate the kids - I chose to send my son to the best private academy in our county... for the pricey sum of $2300 per year. Now just how the hell can the public schools claim they don't have enough money when a private school can do a better job for 1/3 the cost.

This simply stated, is why capitalism is superior to socialism...just one more fine example...

I recently read that in Rhode Island, a large percentage of the persons going to community college have to take classes in reading and writing to be able to take the classes they signed up for, because their skills are so bad.

Having a degree that actually involved reading and grammar, it is absolutely astounding the things that pass from people's mouths. I am one of those jackasses that corrects misspellings and poor grammar. A few questions though:

              1. When did male and female stop becoming adjectives and become nouns in and of themselves?

              2. Does anyone know the difference between possessives and plurals anymore? The number of erroneous apostrophes I see is ridiculous! I work with copiers, not copier's....

              3. Can we expect much from a country that wants to focus on the Three R's, when only one of the three core subjects actually begins with an R???

Maybe you are the one to answer this burning question for me. Am I the only one who has a problem with the phrase " I'm doing as best as I can "? You hear it all the time, and it bothers me every time.
I know I should be ashamed of myself. Strangely though, I am not.

{ " I'm doing as best as I can "? } and " What do you got ? " Not only are we forced to hear it in real-life...but, we have to listen to this on the radio and on TV. What is this country coming to?

OK. how many of you walk in to machines that have an almost unreadable LCD, because they can not find the contrast adjustment, on some machines cleverly hidden with the word "contrast" near it. I can not count the number of work orders I got from the old Minolta 250 with the slide contrast adjustment on the side.

I can add Yankee and British to that list, although south of I-10 in New Orleans (commonly referred to as Coon-ass) is not in my repertoire.

This goes hand in hand with the inability to distinguish the difference between "Replace Image Unit K" and "Replace Toner Bottle K".

Or the abject refusal of some to RTFM when they run into simplistic problems that they have to bother a service tech for the answer. They are the ones I am completely convinced have lost the ability to read, use the index or for that matter, search component, since all the manuals are in PDF format complete with hyperlink text.
