New Sharp MFP Smart Phone User Interface

    See attached video.

Is this the future of MFP LCD display panels? Or is it just clever marketing to appeal to buyers who already have Smart Phones with a similar User Interface?

It's a little busy for a copier display. The basic displays now on a lot of machines tend to confuse the average user, so imagine what that would do.

Let's also not forget that Sharp was the OEM for all of those dead Ricoh touchscreens, so let's hope they haven't used the same technology in these!

I agree that for most of our users, they'll have trouble as they do now with a more basic display.
I'm surprised that the Sharp touchscreens in the Ricoh have failed, we haven't had much of a problem with the Sharp machines.

Of course, I'm assuming the manufacturer cherry-picks the best ones before sending the rest to the other companies.

I am thinking the display will appeal to a buyer with an iPhone who sees three copier quotes that all look the same except for the display. Get the deal signed, worry about the Users later.

Sometimes technology has a way of moving backwards in it's ease of use and purpose served.

Case in point: the love affair with touchscreens

Imagine is all that existed were touchscreens, then some guy came out with a mouse. "Wow I don't have to keep lifting my arm? I can just move this pointer with a slight twist of the wrist? Awesome!"

I don't like it. Like others already stated, it will confuse the hell outta some users.

Why did they make a pull out keyboard for it? I would have thought they would have incorporated it into the touchscreen the guy keeps telling us is so HUGE.

Definitely agree its mainly sales gimmick.

The keyboard is a great sales item. Customers see it and are very impressed. Then they never use it. Who cares it helps get the deal! The keyboard does come in handy if your customers are running OSA applications which have alot of input to be done at the copier however so it does have it's place with OSA users.

I have read that early beta models are locking up and the keyboard freezes.

Isn't it what "beta" means? To iron out all the bugs? If it still does that after the final v1 version, then I'd worry. Not before.

Re: New Sharp MFP Smart Phone User Interface

We've got a dozen or so out in the field right now, and since I tend to do the end user training, have struggled with this unit initially. Having said that, I have been questioning the end users about what they use most and provide a custom screen that is as easy as it can be. In some cases just a copy button, scan button, and maybe Document Filing if they print from a thumb drive or print to the hard drive and need to retrieve it. Once I had done a few of these trainings, it is not as difficult as it seemed to be. My biggest disappointment though, is that we have raised the Sharp banner for years saying "common keyboards", and "simple, intuitive operation of the control panel". That's gone out the window now. They are getting used to it, but why mess with what works? If they wanted a full touch screen, do so with the same general look as what they've hung their hat on for years.
It is what Sharp is putting out now, so we've just got to suck it up and make it work. Seems to be a good product (once the fuser belt fiasco was cleared up) from a service standpoint and that is what counts in a business where the profit comes from the service side of the house.
