    Japanese Spares.

How are we all?? Heard a story the other day that some of the spare parts factories in Japan have been destroyed by the earthquake/tsunami. Don't know how much truth is in it, just wanted to know if any of you are experiencing delays in any spares?

Hope it doesn't get as bad as they are predicting it will over there with the nuclear power plants and everything else.

Anyway, have a good day all.

Most of the news has been over the top and sensationalised to sell air time and news papers. Don’t get me wrong, the folks in the effected regions are doing it very tough and there have been many deaths. I have friends in Tokyo and they are still getting aftershocks. But remember that Japan has the toughest earthquake compliant building codes on the planet and for the most part, they are quite used to earthquakes. The Tsunami was another matter entirely. I am told that if I was in Tokyo at the moment, I wouldn’t know anything had happened, they are back to normal already.

As for parts for our industry, I doubt you will be too affected. Xerox would be affected as some of their factories are within 200ks of Fukushima and they will most certainly have staff involved and the factory has probably been effected. In fact there website states that production of machines has been suspended due to parts.

Other manufacturers may not be so hard hit. Kyocera for example has their plants in the south of the country in Osaka and Kyoto. I doubt they would be hindered at all besides the occasional rolling blackout.

Personally, if someone used the disaster in Japan as a reason for not having parts, I would be suspicious.

I've heard from Oki that their factory mostly produces for Japan and a few countries in that region. So most of the countries should not have troubles ordering parts. And a lot of parts are made in Taiwan or China.

Many parts are made in China. Many parts are assembled in Japan. Many machines have parts made in China and assembled in Japan.

We have received notice from Konica Minolta to expect some delays. Some companies have factories that are shut down for various reasons. On top of that the logistics is fubar'd. I had read that Ricoh makes their toner for the us in the us, however they are planning to take 25% of that for Japan without increasing production. There is some truth behind the rumors, but how far it will go only time will tell. Alot of the actual equipment is made in china, so those factories are ok.

Crisis in Japan and the Printer, Copier, and Supplies Industries: Part 2

Found more info at this site. Seems a lot of chemicals in toner are produced in Japan, that will be the shortage.
