I once read a quote that said "you should avoid conversions about politics or religion unless your out to pick a fight".

I had been pondering this subject only this morning, and it occured to me that people who believe space beings and flying saucers are consider a bit strange and weird. But people who beleive in god are concided stable and normal. Yet no one that believes in god has ever seen him or proved he exists. Yet there are many documented facts that extra-terrestrial beings and flying saucers exist.

So who is the stranger of the two factions ?

o Those that perportrate their deeds in the name of a god they can't prove.
o Or those that believe in extra-terrestrials ?

Just my five cents worth.

Although I don't believe in flying saucers (I believe in UFOs - which are a completely different thing, and not necessarily originated from out-of-space - and I believe in extra-terrestrial life - the universe is too big, and I'm just not sure they've ever been onto our planet), I can see the point in your argument.

But I don't think it's valid. There are many supposedly documented occurrences of "miracles" attributed to god or any saint. Most of them have been proven to be either hoaxes or naturally-ocurring phenomena. Those few that escape any explanation, although strange, still don't prove that any powerful being exists - they just prove we still can't explain everything we find in our day-to-day life.

For example, same thing happen with ghosts, haunted houses and other stuff like that. Many people believe in that - even people that don't believe in god or in UFOs - but most cases can be narrowed to a series of factors that, when together, create an atmosphere that is ripe for that. Human psyche also plays a major part in that - we evolved (and I'm sorry to my catholic friends for this, but it IS proven) from small mammals that roamed the earth during the time of the dinossaurs, and that instinct of being afraid of dark places and the unknown where "monsters" could be hiding can be a residual instict of that time, but it still doesn't mean that ghosts and hauntings exist.

Bottom line is, anyone believes what they want to believe - gods, ghosts, UFOs, nothing - and that's perfectly fine by me. Just don't try to sell it to me, I'm not buying (although, incidentally, I had a lot of fun the last time some Jehovah Witnesses banged at my door - they never came back, I wonder why...).

I think that people in general who bash what other people believe are the ones who start wars in the first place. Peaceful and respectful discussion of beliefs never start wars. It's when one group makes it personal by saying, "You're stupid or crazy for believing or not believing that!" to another group, that arguments, fights, and wars break out. That is the same whether you are religious or atheist. Usually, people who rant about what others believe or protesting it, are just attention seeking, anyway.

Whether a person is a Muslim, Jehovah's Witness, Catholic, Hare Khrishna, or atheist, for that matter, they should be able to talk about what they want to believe from door-to-door, on the street corner, on the internet, or at the airport, without hassle. After all, unless I'm mistaken, it IS a free country. Unless they are kidnapping your children, brainwashing people in a military compound and not letting people leave, blowing up people, training them to use weapons, or trying to coerce you at gunpoint, they are harmless. No one is going to make you believe something you don't want to believe, anyway. A simple, "I'm an atheist and I would not like to discuss what I believe with you", usually does the trick. Really, toleration is what makes for peace, doesn't it?
