I too would recommend a subaru forester if you get a lot of snow.

Otherwise, the Toyota Rav 4's are pretty nice and hold up their value.

This VW GTI V6 netted me 266,261 miles to date. All tech miles. Back seat folds down. Quick, fun auto.

I bought a 1990 Mit Mirage new and drove it through 2004...Literally till the doors fell off..Driver door fell off getting into it at home one morning..Mitsubishi dealer tacked it back on for free and I drove another 10k before I sold it at 250K..Replaced it with a 2003 Lancer and I'm at 232K right now..Still get 35-36 MPG on the highway. Both cars have run flawlessly...Lancer is still on the original timing belt, but did get a new starter last year...Until US can match that reliablity, I will stay with Mitsubishi....PS My wife drives a Saturn L100 w/ 104K..lest you think I am anti american products...Emujo

We're driving volkswagen tourans - it's ok reliable-wise but it don't like how the car looks like (= like a family bumper). Before I had a mazda 6 - not really fancy but I had more fun with it, even if I'm not really a fan of japanese car brands.

Current Car: 2007 Ford Focus Wagon, avg 29.4 mpg and currently has 328k miles on it.

I'm also looking at a Honda Fit, a friend of mine bought one, and he says no matter how he drives it, it always gets 41 mpg (stick) and the way the seats fold down, it can hold a lot of st00f. I also liked all the little cubbies to put stuff in and the cup holders infront of the bottom of the A/C vents to keep your drinks cold.

Just gave back my vw golf tdi with 300,000 kms, will be our spare car for when techs' cars are in the shop. New vehicle is a Scion Xb which has great interior room but I find the cargo area a little small to carry parts and pm kits.

Mitsubishi Colt for city center, and smaller installations.

                  Citroen Berlingo for bigger jobs.

We just started using the XB here. Fold the back seats down and install a cage to keep items from sliding up into the front. Good little car for the money.
Accidents don't just happen. They must be carelessly planned.

The best tech car is one your employer provides to you because no matter how much reimbursement you get, it's not enough even if you cheat on the mileage, which is tough to do now that GPS units are on the scene. On my first day when I worked for HP, the other techs told me to stretch the mileage, I said 5 miles each way and they all LOL'd. You've got enough to do, let the boss worry about his vehicles.

                      My .02 cents.

Transits are bulletproof, never heard anyone say a bad word about them and I've driven pretty much every body style out there. Short wheel base with a medium roof what you're looking at?
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

                          Hit it.

Ive heard some concerns of the 2.0 litre engine being underpowered, especially with a full.carstock. Not sure what body yet, surely dont need a high roof. Do want four doors

The transit seems to be a bit unstable on the open road on a windy day with no load. Stay away from big trucks unless you have some extra weight in it. Other than that, good vehicles.

Many of the techs at my company use them, they're pretty universally reviled but I used to drive one for a different position and I didn't mind it much. That little 2.0L four-banger will be underpowered with a full carstock; it's kind of underpowered under any load but unless you're hauling a bunch of machines around, they seem to be perfectly serviceable vehicles. Space is awesome in the two-seaters.
