I think I need to explain this better.
what qualifications, according to the manufacturer that you support, would qualify you as a master technician.
I am in need of this information, as best you can provide, to determine seniority and the ability of techs who want to go from one manufacturer support to another.

when I worked for a Toshiba Dealer, there was a master technician program.
I would like to know if other manufacturers have a similar program in place and what is required to reach that level.

Would you consider that a Master Tech would be the same as an Expert ?
By definition : An EXPERT is someone who has made EVERY MISTAKE POSSIBLE IN A VERY SMALL AREA OF STUDY .
Therefore ;;;;; If you have matched this criteria ; then you may call yourself a MASTER .

I have been doing this since the mid 70's and I am no where close to master ... just call me grasshopper.
                  "The Serenity Prayer" . . .
God grant me the serenity to accept stupid people , the courage to not waste my time and energy on them , and the wisdom to know that I cannot fix STUPID .

Re: What denotes a master technician?

Are you guys talking about certifications you can get? I think these aren't necessarily worth much since I know enough people with lot's of nice-looking certificate documents who aren't really smart when it comes to complex calls. Same goes for long year experience - that's not a guarantee for beeing smarter than junior techs either. I wish there would be less people beeing just full of oneself out there without having an idea to get the job done properly.

I think a good tech must be able to fix things while considering not just the issue but also things like costs savings and maybe doing some preventive work/looking above the edge. Furthermore I'd expect some manners and beeing eloquent because it's important that we have a good relationship with the customer in order to understand their needs, even if we have to teach them that certain things might be not possible. Returning customers are the best customers

I agree with all of my colleagues, I add that a good technician should not be afraid to make interventions and above all should never be considered superior to others and come in short, must be collaborative

                          2. When Customers, Management, and other Techs all seek your advise.

                          4. When The Boss actually listens and accepts and asks for your opinion.

                          6. When titles and job descriptions are meaningless to you.
                          7. When you know your job and do it everyday without thinking or complaining

You just may be a Master Technician !

at Konica Minolta there are 5 levels, master is the highest, being considered to be a reference for expert associate trainee etc. usually a master tech will not only have all the base certs but will be very advanced in a specialty like color production print, or networking/security (ME!) usually a master has been at it 5 or more years and has the full support of his service manager to get every certification offered.
