    Is Toner Exposive?

So I might to some be called a rookie in the copier world after 2 years of servicing machines. But I have been told that Toner can be pretty explosive.

Anyone done this, if so what did you blow up and was it bigger than you expected or less than expected. Any youtube videos would be cool too.

This is the best Toner Video I could find

Yes I have confirmed this... both black and color toner are extremly combustable. I'll see if I can post the video from last 4th of july, but it's a little rough. AHHH the things that go BOOM !!!!!!!!

      Re: Is Toner Exposive?

Many years ago (30+) I heard of a school where toner was in a garbage can, and the custodian had thrown the contents in the incinerator.

      The results were disastrous.

(I wonder if anyone actually has an incinerator anymore. I would think they'd be illegal.)

Check Mythbusters test with coffee creamer flame thrower.
Any small particle will flame up if floating in the air.
Toner is a smaller particle than creamer, therefore a bigger flame if dissipated in the air.
Try to lay a lit match to a small pile of toner, it will just melt the toner and put the match out.

The flash point of toner in a pile would take a blowtorch to ignite it to burn, but it will burn itself out in a short time.

Toner melts at roughly 120 c.
Most fuser thermal fuses or thermostats pop @135 air temp.

Toner is safe as long as you don't blow it into the air and light a match.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

Well well Mr nmfaxman, i never took you for a TV geek, mind you i love Myth Busters myself. It is a truly great science learning programme that i would much rather have had in school to watch rather than read..

Yes but flour bakes and burns it does not melt or explode

Actually flour does explode, I will try to track it down but a local bakers was gutted by fire after a flour bin ignighted after it was left in the wrong conditions. The firefighters found bits of the bin embedded in roof timbers and there wasn't much left of the rest of the bakery either.

As for Mythbusters apart from the cement truck, the 1 million match heads was also pretty impressive!

wheat dust is the same way....growing up out in the wheatheart of america it wasn't uncommon to hear of a grain silo exploding due to something setting off wheat dust in the air...

                      Substitute toner for creamer.
