Re: GPS
I see now why you quit, there is no way on earth I would have this device attached to my own personal property whether it was used for work or not. From the description on that website they actively try and prevent you from disconnecting it but what about your off time? What business is it of your employers what you do after hours or at the weekend? I know from experience that they do look at the after hours tracking data as a friend and ex-colleague of mine from the domestic goods place had a tracker in a small car derived van that he was allowed private use of. He came in on Monday morning to snide comments "i.e Aren't you a bit old for going on Rollercoasters Brian?" from the boss about his trip to a theme park over the weekend with his kid. I commuted into the depot in my own car and didn't take the big van home so I didn't have that problem but still, he was mightily pissed off about that, the bosses laughed it off like it wasn't an issue, but again, they had nothing fitted to their company cars keeping tabs on them so why would it be an issue to them?
When the issue was raised at a staff meeting, we were told that as we reimbursed the company for private fuel, they monitored off hours use to make sure that the claims were accurate and we weren't trying to fiddle it. The fact that we submitted a mileage return every month with the month start and finish odometer reading and the daily business mileage for every working day obviously wasn't evidence enough. I mean you have the daily reading off the tracker and all you need to do is tally them up for the month with accuracy evidenced with customer postcodes from the dispatch system, subtract the start odometer reading from the end, then subtract business miles from that and BOOM there's your private miles ... as accurately as the tracker can provide it without any reason whatsoever to monitor what people are doing off the clock.
If we're going to get the GPS treatment where I'm currently at, it'll be via the PDA I have for call dispatch, not in vehicle. It's not enough to know just where the vehicle is, they apparently need to know where YOU are at all times during the working day.
