    One Man Band

Has anybody taken the plunge and gone out on their own as a technician servicing and repairing?
What has your experience been like?

15 or 20 years ago, when there were actually decent profit margins, it was fairly simple and easy. We had a few techs, sales reps and managers go out and do just that back then, and they made out well... for a while, anyway.

I've bumped into most of them over the years, and guess what - they're all either working for dealers or have gone into a different field.

As cutthroat as this business is, I just can't imagine making a go of it these days.

You'd think a dealer has so much overhead, that an indie could undercut the hell out of him.

Big Company X has to include rent/mortgage, salaries, gas checks, insurance, taxes, etc etc to his quotes.

Indie working out of his garage has to add almost nothing to his markup.

But it just doesn't work out that way.

Indie has to start with no sales base, so the grarage he works out of ends up being a large percentage of his income...

I've done a lot of small things on the side (mostly computer related) but I don't want to see a copier or printer at the end of the day

Also, there is so much stupid sue-age out there, er, sorry, nonsensical lawsuits, even if you are really careful you would probably need lawyer support at sometime, which can be really expensive.
