Not sure how common-law relationships work in the states, but I did study up on it a bit for Canada... In a co-habitating domestic partnership, the laws apply as follows:
If the couple has remained together, in the same residence of a conjugal relationship for 3 years it is a common-law marriage. If that same couple were to have a child involved, there is only 1 year required for the relationship to be recognized as a common-law marriage.
In all technicality, she could be your wife, but again I don't know how it works South of the border...
I've stated before, Paul's a good guy, and it started a rather entertaining flame war. He's trying to earn a buck just like the rest of us, and he happens to be a big fan of a good joke now and then too...
