I forgot to make sure the charge control grid (For a Bizhub 601) was secure before placing the whole drum cartridge in and turning the machine on.

    Nice black copies.

Re: Time to admit to all your boo boos

Not a booboo so much as unfortunate circumstances. I had an MXC311 in a location about an hour away from me, the call was originally an L4-16 fuser lock code. No problem, these little things blew the fusers like a tijuana hooker blows goats (when they first came out, anyways). Figure I'll just bring a fuser and be done with it, right? Nope.

As soon as I get there, replace the fuser, copier starts making funny sound, like grinding... Certain I know what's going on, I open the door to find the main drive gear for the fuser has just completely disintegrated, the teeth were entirely gone. Well damnit! Time to go back to the shop, I know I have the gear as I have at least 2 on stock at all times, before the updates this little gear would disintegrate if you looked at it the wrong way.

Trip number two out there, keeping in mind it's an hour away (fortunately it's my only call or I would have been screwed!). Get on site, replace the gear after much struggles to remove the damn Jesus clips in the tiny little gear housing box. Fire up machine again, sounds good! Then it starts grinding, again, in a different spot. My heart sinks a little, and does a reverse Grinch and shrunk 3 sizes that day. The sound is coming from a different spot, the back of the machine? This one is completely new to me at the time.

Rip off the back cover (not something that needs to be done terribly often with these little plastic boxes, their control boards and laser access is all through the side panel) and discover the drive pack has now chewed up some gears. In no way, shape or form could I have prepared for any of this, other than the fuser itself. The main drive gear usually went 2-3 maintenance cycles before it would bite the bullet unless the machine was being over used, and the drive pack was a freak occurrence that has only happened elsewhere in my company once to anyone's knowledge.

Trip 3, head back to office, rip off drive pack from demo machine and return to customer site. Time spent driving - 6 hours; replace gear pack and fix machine, things finally run appropriately. I get back to office, L3-12 tray 1 lift trouble; my mind is absolutely blown; 4 completely separate faults at one time on one machine within the span of a day. Had to go back the day after to replace the lift motor as with the 6 hours of driving, lunch and working on the machine I had exhausted all the time available in the working day. Rip the lift motor from demo machine and replaced it, machine has been breezing through everything since then.

tl;dr 4 separate faults on one machine in the course of a single day makes my heart do a reverse Grinch and shrink 3 sizes that day.

Back in the old days I was working on a Canon NP 30. This is a liquid machine.
I had cleaned the tank at the shop and brought it out to swap with the one in the machine.
I forgot to reconnect 1 hose, long story short I ended up mopping the floor.

Then when working on a Canon NP 400 dropped a completely full waste toner tank.

I loookig back and think I should have started a floor cleaning business.

I hadn't long been in the business and I was out for the day with Bill (a lovely gentleman, RIP), we pulled up at this customer, he parked the car and we were chatting all the way from the car into the building.
We had to service a Xerox 2300, again, we were chatting away while working on it. Bill emptied the waste toner (anyone who ever worked on these machines will remember that the waste toner was clipped into the back of the transfer unit with a metal clip at either end. We were still chatting when Bill picked up the transfer unit to put it back in the machine, just a split second too late, I pointed out that he hadn't refitted the clips. Now the waste toner had been emptied, but you'd be amazed just how much residual toner there is clinging to the walls of the tank. Bill was left standing there, didn't dare move either foot for fear of making the WHITE carpet even dirtier. There was just one man in the office, who, every so often, peered over the top of his newspaper to see how bad the mess on the floor was. Bill removed his car keys from his pocket and asked me to go and get the vacuum cleaner from his car. 20 minutes later (bear in mind that Bill is rooted to the spot) I returned, empty handed. He asked me if I had trouble locating the vacuum cleaner...no, due to the fact that we had been talking all the way from the car to the building, I had taken no notice of where we were parked, I hadn't managed to find his car LOL
Once he told me exactly where the car was parked, I managed to find his vacuum cleaner and, amazingly, the white carpet was still white when we left

Since I never make mistakes with copiers, I'll have to add one from before that. I was in the service and during some sort of celebration at the base, I was assigned to demonstrate the firetruck. I was on the turret on top of the truck and was suppose to spray water on the ground off to the side of the truck. In my excitement and inexperience, I neglected to unlock the turret so it could be rotated and also pulled the handle down past water to foam. The turret was pointed directly at a helicopter we had on display, which was immediately covered in foam. To make matters worse, the window was open on our side and the cockpit was fill with foam. Also there were several people standing on our side of it who were covered, including, as it turned out, a retired World War I Army General. Not my best day.
I know I should be ashamed of myself. Strangely though, I am not.

I was ordering parts through the Ricoh website, and committed an agregious typo - I meant to order 9 corona wires, not 900. Luckily, Ricoh caught it, and called to "confirm" that I wanted 900 corona wires? I always review my p.o.s now......

Re: Time to admit to all your boo boos

So there I was on board an Aircraft carrier. LHA-3, not really a carrier but basically the same size and carried jets, helo's, marines and other amphib vehicles.

There was a certain clam shell xerox machine that was not properly secured and took more than one trip to the steel deck in heavy seas.

The frame was hopelessly bent, no amount of skillful reforming would ever make it right.

It leaked toner like the dirty pig it was.

Tired of endlessly wiping, vacuuming, and brushing to no avail, an idea was birthed.

Why not take it outside and blow it out with compressed air.

To the flight deck catwalk it went, with air hose in hand.

Whooosh, it worked, a fine black cloud of toner could be seen off the fantail of the ship. And a wonderfully huge cloud it was.

What fun, and the inside of the POS never looked better. It will probably run at least 137 copies before the next service call now.

Just then the fire alarm could be heard. Hey where's the fire...I could hear the Flight Deck Air Boss (Big Cheese on the flight deck) announcing (on the PA system) a class bravo (black smoke) fire off the port side aft catwalk.

As I looked up from the catwalk to the flight deck I could see the men donning their gear and loading up in the vehicles to make their way to the scene of the fire.

LOL thought I...They think this is a fire. So I wave my arms and tell them it's ok. The Air Boss sees me, and tells me over the PA system to clear the area. When the first responders arrive.

They radio back the details... and the fire is canceled. Everybody is pissed. Then the Air Boss uses the PA system to request my presence in flight control. I go, he chews my ass, I leave.

Moral of the story... Dont blow a xerox machine out on the back end of an aircraft carrier without letting the Airboss know personally, even if you have permission from the Chief Engineer and the Captain.

Back in the day when I was in electronics school, I also was working third shift pushing a broom at a truck stop. For the most part, an awesome job when you are learning about how the drain works in a MOSFET or how to determine the most efficient antenna length for a given radio frequency, as pushing a broom required exactly no participation from my brain, and occasionally I got to see the neatest and weirdest things ever.
Still, as I was working third shift I had to fill in for people who got sent home early because of lack of work, and one time when I was helping the pump jocks (there were still full service islands back then) I finished fueling a tractor trailer rig and apparently didn't stow the fuel hose properly and the trailer landing leg caught the hose and pulled the pump completely off its base.
I discovered then that the odor of diesel fuel takes a while to clean out of clothing. Also the people in the fire department can be really grouchy if they have to make a dry run at three or four o'clock in the morning.
