It may not be solely the techs fault about 'fixing what's broke' or applying a cheap solution to fix a fault. I don't know who they work for, but it's possible it goes further up the chain. I'm sure the techs would prefer to change the parts to keep it running smoothly, but someone higher up is trying to cut down on expenditure AND expand his profit at the same time.

    Just my 0.02c.

Now, no one will know what the 'rant' was all about.
Although, you can probably get a good idea from Phrag's post.

        What can you do though?

We've a similar, yet probably not as worse problem here.

As a young tech, I'm torn between, "Do I do a proper job and replace the parts that are at EoL, but still functioning normally, or just the parts that are broken?"

I'd like to replace all the old consumable parts if I have them handy, even if they are working OK for now, but if I kept throwing money at every photocopier, how much would it eat into profits, and therefore wages, job security etc.

Although it;s not a primary factor in performance reviews, parts expenditure per tech is looked at in those reviews.

I hate having to go back the next day to replace something else that decided to fall over overnight. I'm sure we all understand that feeling.
