I was servicing a Kyocera ECOSYS M2535dn when the customer requested me to disable the auto power save function on the machine. Obviously I explained the power save function and its benefits but to my surprise the customer told me that nothing works after the machine enters the power save mode......Turned out that her cell phone charger connected to the USB host port located in the front of the machine did not work when the machine was in power save mode....lol......funny....I think so....

That's dang funny. You did tell her that was a bad idea, I guess....NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING -
Re: USB Host Port...How handy....
Ran into something similar with USB powered hubs, seems not all of the USB ports on the KM devices are capable of powering devices like this. Thought it was pretty strange as USB is a standard..Why would one port power the hub and not the other. No Biggie though. Re: USB Host Port...How handy....
Standards or no, some USB devices pull a lot more power than others, and not all ports respond equally.
I have a Western Digital portable HDD I bought some years back. Most PCs power it with no issues, but it has a power jack, as the manual said, "just in case more power was needed."'
I have another (much older, company provided), that actually has two USB plugs coming off of one cable, in the event one port doesn't provide enough juice.“I think you should treat good friends like a fine wine. That’s why I keep mine locked up in the basement.” - Tim HawkinsComment

Re: USB Host Port...How handy....
I use the USB port to plug my portable electronic crystal ball in. I can then tell customers instantly when the new parts will be in stock and when their machine will be back up and running.

I have the same problem with Samsung home theatre system. The USB port provided in the front of the system will read memory sticks with ease but refuses to read an external HDD.....probably a power or memory to big issue ?The product may be brilliant and the salesperson proficient, but if the technician isn’t efficient, then the story will end there.Comment

They're 99% SATA now in anycase. I beleive higher 7200rpm would take a bit more power. Probably the reason they use an external power supply.Inauguration to the "AI cancel-culture" fraternity 1997...

Re: USB Host Port...How handy....
I had an external hard drive like that for a while. It had one USB cable for data, and another one for power.
The thing would crash my XP computer if I didn't hook up both cables when the machine was off.
I guess newer USB units aren't always as backwards compatible with USB 1 ports as they say.Comment
