It would be pretty cool if you could remove the rat, and the drum would be working well enough but would just leave a faint rat like "ghost" on each copy. Had an old Canonthat we got a call about loud squeeking and a burning smell.
Mouse stuck tail first in fuser. Glad we got there after it died.
Asked customer if he was hungry for fried mouse. Why do they call it common sense?
If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?Comment

Many years ago a customer bought a mita 1415 in for repair. Had a smudged copy. Ran a page through to test and there was a smudge that looked almost exactly like a mouse. Seems a mouse was inside the copier when the customer started making some copies. It ran right under the drum when it had a charge, The transfer sep voltage went through the mouse and burned the image of the critter into the surface of the drum. I kept that drum for about twelve years just to show people. Sadly one day a "new hire" was cleaning up the shelves and threw it away.Comment

Once had a CLC 5000 in a print shop that was throwing laser error codes, that series had a massive laser unit for the 4 lasers. opened the top up and Mom and 4 or 5 little baby mice living inside scattered every which way. startled me so bad I stumbled backward and fell over my toolbag. fixed a harness they had chewed thru than the machine started throwing all kinds of weird codes, took all the covers off and found turds and all kinds of chewed wires everywhere in the machine. Told the customer to call his insurance company and get a cat for his print shop.Comment

Smallest copier tech I've ever seen - I've seen a laser printer where you could walk inside to swap the drums, but that's ridiculous!' "But the salesman said . . ." The salesman's an asshole!'

Back in the late '80s, I had a call on a Canon NP 7550 for trail edge skewing and bad transfer.
The trans / sep corona was good.
When I pulled the back cover off, there he was; the little sucker had sunk his pointy little fangs into the transfer HV cable...he was quite fried.
I extricated him, by a fang, with my forceps.
When I showed the print show owner, he said, "Oh look! The only Canon copier with a mouse!".

I had a di470 that was erasing about 2 inches on one side. I was really stumped until remembering another tech had pulled a dead mouse out of that machine weeks earlier. Sure enough, a strip of paper the critter had drug into the machine was blocking the laser. The greatest enemy of knowledge isn't ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. Stephen HawkingComment

Re: Well, I haven't had this as a call ...yet
I've removed 5 mice during my career. 1 would have qualified as a rat and it was in an old HP IIISI. Fried in the fuser.
I've also seen a variety of insects, spiders, a baby scorpion, and snake skin, from the animal kingdom.
From the people kingdom, I've seen fingernails, hair wrapped around rollers (complete with skin tags), used condoms (eww factor), and my personal favorite a wooden marijuana container complete with a supply of weed in it, a removeable pipe, and a compartment with matches.
Guess there isn't too much I haven't seen in them.

Had an FS1370 printer at a school start throwing a laser error code. Drove to the site, opened the machine to inspect the laser unit. Found a bunch of ants had taken up residence in there. Blew out the ants and was instructed to tell the customer that next time this would be billable. Someone with poison was spraying the building before I had gotten the machine back together. If at first you don't succeed, redefine successComment
