    Greetings from Missouri

I've been working all IT equipment since 1992. From printers to fax machines to phones to scanners. This is my one post to get me above the 0 count. I registered here so I can find info on common problems and not re-invent the wheel. I hope I can help others out too when I stumble across issues I've dealt with before.

    Thanks!

What OEM's do you currently find yourself working on the most?

I deal mainly with printers, but a few copiers too. I used to do more copier stuff at an older job. We mainly have Lexmarks here. We had HP's for a while, then Dells, and now Lexmarks. We took on another agency and now I'm working on Sharps. From my experience, the ones that break down the most are the Sharps. I actually came here looking for a reason why the fuser drive gear cracked and stripped on a MX-C311 (it has been plagued with registration problems too). I was actually looking for the service manual so I could find the p/n for the gear, then found a thread mentioning that the fuser is known to lock up and break the gear, and that there was an updated part number. We currently have the printers at that location serviced by someone else, but due to several attempts for them to fix problems that never seem to last more than a day, and getting hit with replacing "consumables" the cost has jumped through the roof everytime they come out. One person from that agency said that they had a part replaced (not sure what it was) and was told it was consumable, then it failed the next week and was replaced again. They said since it was consumable, even if it failed in 5 mins of install that there is no warranty. That is just BS to me. Anyway, I'm looking at that sharp to see what the gear was and put it in myself, but now the fuser breaking the gear complicates things as that was replaced recently and they are not cheap. At the main building I work in, I do all the stuff myself as do a few other techs.

The older HP's are rock solid printers, 4000 series we still have going that have over 600,000 on them. (those work great for odd TINY, SHORT, & THICK paperboard that some users have to print to since the path goes straight through) Others we got from other agencies with low page counts. We typically try to put out a MFP, then a color printer next to it where needed. Since we have a lot of lexmarks now, that is what I work on most of the time. We had some Xerox Phasers, those are all dead now, and we still have some Dells (got them cause they were cheap) but the Dells have had problems with a few models, (dumping magenta, others the system board croaks). We mainly do lexmarks due to the pricing we have got from them, they are willing to help and develop apps for the larger MFPs for us, and another huge factor is we have to have working IPDS not the external box crap HP does, and also we need envelope feeders on the MFPs, which no one else offers currently. This morning I installed a 100k kit in a Lexmark 945e, the tone auger I did not install because I did not feel like taking the time to pull out the belt, which is a $2,000 part that can be damaged easily, and takes a lot to pull. We had some user run half used sticky label paper through one once, that probably wasn't even for a laser printer, and it tore up the belt. That was a mess! It wasn't work related either once we got the belt out!

Work on lexmarks and the 4000 series HP's a lot, since those get used the most. Just normal replacement items, although one T640 I'm having to replace the main drive gear for the trays since that got broke (thinking a user tried moving it with the trays still underneath it). That took some time to get to, at least the Sharp MX-C311 copier fuser gear is easy to take off with 2 e-clips and it's right there in your hand!

      I'm in central Missouri.
