Lexmark 748 dte, mfp reads on op panel "load paper in tray 1"

The customer was annoyed that the mfp was indicating that the paper was low and it would only work if the tray was full of paper. I removed the tray and removed the ream of paper to see if the paper size was set correctly, it was. I then removed the rear panel then ran an internal device statistics page, while I shined my flashlight in the back to see if the pick tires were turning on the paper, but because of the nature of the tires I couldn't decipher if the tires were moving (fine treads on pick tires). I called Lexmark tech support and they steered me down the rabbit hole saying that I needed a new pick arm assembly. After I ordered the new pick arm assembly, I returned to the customer, a little apprehensive about installing a new pick arm assembly in this virtually new mfp with 97K clicks on it and it was one year old. I removed the tray with the paper set at the correct paper size for plain paper (8 1/2 X 11) and stood it up on one hand, keeping the quarter ream of paper in place with the other and being the casual minded observer that I am, I noticed that there was a gap behind the paper of a few millimeters. Definitely enough slop to cause the paper to not feed out of the tray. I set the paper tray smaller to accommodate the paper just a few teeth on the tray and magically the mfp began churning out paper. Can anyone explain why this happens?

Can't do that right now, but you might find an answer here:

Good luck, and welcome to CTN!
