    Amateur

Y'know what they say, "Amateurs do it for love; professionals do it for money."

I started out in electronics with a ham radio ticket at age 13. Got my first electronics technician job at a communications shop while still in high school. Quit college to start a stereo/CB repair business. Worked on military avionics and mini-computers. Fixed "washing machine" disk drives for a while. Built my first computer (Heathkit H-89) and home-brewed a giant 4 MB hard disk to it.

A few years back, I decided to chuck it all and "bought the farm." Literally.

But I still mess around with electronics, with a special fascination with colour laser printers. My first was the original Apple Color LaserWriter. Since then, I've had a couple HPs, a Samsung, a Minolta, and now a giant Ricoh Aficio MP C4500 that is bigger than my desk. I've been in the guts of all of them. The hairiest was replacing the polygon mirror motor on the HP8500.

Currently, converting a 1981 Volkswagen Vanagon to electric drive and making goat cheese. Life isn't boring!

I won't buy an electronic gadget if I can't get service lit for it. Sadly, that seems to mean fewer and fewer electronic gadgets for me these days...
