Just wrote it on another topic but adding a simple QA captcha on the registration form with a technical "copy-tech" question can do the trick.

Over the past couple of days, the spam seems to be gone. But it will most likely return.

Yeah something like this, I read a little about vBulletin and it seems this kind of "human check" is already available so it can be enabled in no time if our admin agrees to enable it.
I run a phpBB based forum myself and fake account registrations stopped immediately after turning on QA.
