How often do manufacturers typically update their machine operating systems?

Do manufacturers typically release a new machine OS version with each product generation?

To what extent are firmware updates backwards compatible with previous models?

Any insight is appreciated.

It depends.
Most of the time you'll have multiple firmware releases for new models, then maybe an update in the next 6 months, then only if there is a real reason (to update SMBv3 or TLS for example).
For Sharp it's one firmware for one serie, for Epson it's one firmware for each model.
