We had a huge ice storm first part of 2007. One of my customers, a local government office had
a pole/transformer go down but all it did was drop out part of the 220 line. It allowed too much
voltage into a 15 amp MFP, got by the ESP and took out the low voltage power supply. It was so
bad, there was black oil that blew out of the caps, dripping down the back of the machine. And,
the ESP, you could hear it rattle.
Took it back to the shop, popped it open and it was literally fried on the inside. Called ESP and they
paid for the cost to the customer to replace the power supply & a new ESP. The ESP tech I talked
to I think was more concerned to find out why their filter "failed".
Only time I've used or a customer had to use their warranty protection, but it worked!
Sounds more like what can happen when a transmission line gets hit by lightning. I had to repair a PC once that had a lightning strike come in on the phone line connected to the MODEM, Fried the MODEM card, the power supply popped filter capacitors on the main board and and took part of the boot sector on the hard drive.
