    Warehouse manager wages

The company I work for has two warehouse managers, one for the parts and supplies, which I currently manage, and the other is equip and deliveries warehouse. Our company is looking to combine both warehouses and they asked me to manage the new combined warehouse. My current annual salary is about 42k and was offered 15% increase if I take the offer. Since i will still be in charge of my current responsibilities and taking on more overseeing the equip orders, deliveries and set up of equip, I think 15% which will bring me up to 47k is too low. I need to respond by next week. I am thinking of asking for 52K. I don't know what the average wage is for warehouse managers, but 52k sounds reasonable to me. I was hoping I could get some expert advise from anyone in the forum. Thanks in advance.
BTW, some of my current responsibilities are: managing a team of three, ordering parts, supplies, supplying stock for about 15 techs, managing auto restock for techs and outside customers warehouses, managing shipping and receiving dept, inventory control for parts and supplies.

    Re: Warehouse manager wages

    Some things to consider.

1- How much does the warehouse manager currently make?

2- You have to consider the current job market, and your relationship with upper management.

3- A 15% bump in salary is NOT enough, (personally I would consider this an insult) especially in El Lay. BTW.......42K x 1.15 will bring you up to $48,300

4- What kind of benefits do you get? Is the company paying for health insurance?

5- Can you handle the combined job? Will it require you to spend more time at work and away from your family?

6- If it were me, I would ask for a 35% minimum raise with regular reviews and increases. The company will save money, not only on salary, but on the benefits as well for not having to pay benefits for 2 employees.

Good luck, I'm interested to see what others have to say.

Thanks Paul. To answer in the same order,
1- I dont now how much the current shop manager makes
2- Upper management has been asking me to consider this position for about two months, they told me they want me to take over the whole warehouse operations because of my organization skills. They also told me they want me to lead this because they fell my ideas and vision is what they are looking for. We are using eautomate and I've become good at it, while the current shop manager puts everything on paper and pencil.
3- Yes 15% is too low. I used a ballpark figure of how much I make so it would bring me up to what you said. Still not enough I feel.
4- company pays for my health insurance, which is a really good plan with only a $10 copay per visit. We also have free dental and vision, even though this plan sucks.
5- I asked what my responsibilities would be if I took the offer and basically they want someone to organize the shop and put inventory controls in place. The problem is that they just wrote off about $64k in equip that the shop manager could not account for. In his defense, there are others that touch inventory, but the problem is that he is not computer friendly, so there was no way he could watch what others are doing with his stocked equip.
They told me I would keep my same responsibilities as parts manager, the shop manager would still keep doing what he is doing but he would respond to me, as well as his team. They want me to implement the same procedures I have for my parts warehouse and apply them to the equip warehouse. Eventually we are looking to move buildings and expand, so both dept will be combined into one warehouse with one manager overseeing it. About spending more time at work, thats one of the reasons I didnt jump on it two months ago, and I told my superiors that family was more important to me than anything else, so I made it clear I would not work weekends or exagerated amounts of overtime. 7-4 is my schedule and I would not change that. Surprisingly, they all agreed with me and repeatedly told me I wouldnt have to work more than what I am doing now. Work is only 5 miles from home so I dont see a problem. Still 15% is too low.
6- I think I answered that on 5, they are keeping the other manager, but now under my watch. 35% would be good.

Gato - (I looked up your name in your profile) Do you play poker? This is where it might help. The key here is to NOT sell yourself short. It sounds like you work for a good company. (Probably one of the last).
I wish some other folks would chime in here.

I totally agree that 15% is far too low an increase, and that 35% seems much more reasonable. (Although, sadly, I've heard that having a job is the new raise in this so-called economy.)

Have you checked any of the sites that survey what folks are getting paid? I would think that there would be something for warehouse management, albeit very non-specific.

One factor to consider, though, is if you don't accept an offer, what would happen to your career with your employer? I would think that your chances of future promotions would be just about nil.

I'd bet that just about any career counselor would tell you to take any promotion that you are offered, even if it's not exactly what you're looking for. Accepting it will only strengthen your chances of moving further up in the future, especially if the company expands the way you say it will.

If nothing else, the added responsibility would look good on your resume for a future employer.

I would ask for a 25% pay increase. Why do you ask, here's why:

            1. Hiring a guy off the street would mean training a new guy. Plus some study I read a while ago showed that employers expect new hires that are leaving another employer to be looking for about a 25% pay increase from their previous job's salary.
            2. You said you wouldn't have to do too much more and it looks like they have good benefits.
            3. If you don't like the other warehouse manager, ask for a 40% pay increase if they agree to fire the other guy and you'll agree to take over both positions duties. They'll still be saving a lot.
            4. Don't accept the poor economy excuse. Sure the economy sucks but everybody has responded by raising prices anyway to make up for it. Actually you can use the poor economy excuse to support item number 3.

Is the old manager likely to make your job hellish? That'd be a big consideration when deciding what the job is worth.

I used to do pretty much the same thing as you the last couple of years at my last job (before then I was a field tech at the same company), except add dispatch and the occasional network troubleshooting/installation call in the field. The only difference was that I wasn't given any kind of manager title. The guy who had the manager title for our department really didn't do anything but go to meetings and talk to customers who were really pissed about something. I remember asking for more money, too. Of course, in my case the "manager", instead of pleading my case to the owners, told them I had a bad attitude. Yeah, he had a "throw your employees under the bus" management style, I guess. I didn't matter, though. We both got fired a couple months later when the owners decided to move the entire warehouse portion of the business to the other end of the state (California). I guess my point is, be careful asking for more money if you like/need your job. It worked to my benefit in my case as I ended up getting a much better job in IT (while still being able to work on copiers and printers on a regular basis) making a lot more money. Maybe you should be happy that they're even offering an increase in pay at all. It seems Industry Standard to pile on more and more work at the same pay rate without even the yearly 2 or 3% cost of living pay increase. Although, 47K is not a lot of money. I couldn't live on it. At least not with a wife and 1 and a half kids (wife's pregnant). To tell you the truth, I have no idea what you should do. Are you married? Do you have any kids?

Those salaries at Indeed.com seem a bit high to me. I'm not a bookkeeper or anything so I don't know how much they should be, but even the average is considerably higher than the OP would get for managing 2 warehouses.

Would be fun to know how much money he's actually making now.

A friend working as an accountat at said that people's responsibilities are growing in pretty much every job, but the pay stays pretty much the same. About 30% more responsibilities would mean only 10% more salary. But I don't know...
