Using a Card Reader on the MFD

Can somebody tell me what is the minimum possible requirement to use a proximity card for logging in to a MFP device ,I intend to login through proximity card and use machines built in features of hold print or secure print options to release my print jobs.,

Are you using a software solution such as PaperCut or Uniflow or Equitrac?

KM products can utilize card readers w/o any 3rd party software. It can be done using AD, LDAP, or user authentication/account track. Each user will have to self register their cards prior to use. As there are a variety of cards, you may want to have the card tested so you can be sure you pick the correct reader. KMs AU-205H supports 4 formats including HID, so this offers a wide latitude, but you must program the card through admin mode if you are using anything other than HID. I would assume that other manufactures offer the same basic options. EMujo

Most machine have the option of entering a password or user ID for certain print job type. That password/ID needs to be entered at the MFP in order to release the job to be printed. This is also available with most cloud printing options.

Not going to happen. Without some kind of middleware, the card has nothing to authenticate against. Otherwise, any card could be used to release any job on the machine. Entering a code at the display of the machine to release a job isn't that hard.

I imagine most modern MFP's allow cards to be used with their internal accounting modules, I've seen some MFP's out there that do this.

Anyway, the original poster should contact Ricoh Support and go from there.

Ricoh requires Card Authentication Package be installed in order to recognize card reader.

If you want authentication on a Ricoh machine without any additional software, you are limited to Windows authentication or User Codes, which could also be called "PIN codes".

Card readers need software to talk to, which the MFP cannot provide.

FWIW, if you do go forward with any solution, such as CAP, PaperCut, etc...note that all these apps require Java. I don't think that any of the models you have mentioned have it as standard equipment, so it would need to be added to each machine.

I mentioned Java because all too often it gets forgotten about, then becomes a panic when things don't work at install time. I think we've all been there at one time or another.
