    Public folders and scanning

scanned to a public folder today...

    canon c256if

I learned how to do scan setups with kyocera...
the folder was mapped to z....
so I figured scanning would not work...
I and the local IT person hunted for the computer but we could not find the computer with the mapped z drive
so we located the folder on the network...
It was on a computer with a public folder that public folder was actually mapped to z drive
so I went on my way and set up a shared folder the way I normally did and ignored the z drive since I couldn't get a password or login for it...

out of dumb curiosity, I decided to use the copier function in the scan setting to try and locate the folder...
it did workgroup... then found the computer... then found the public folder... then found the individual shared folders... then picked a folder and I had pathing... backed out a bit and checked for connection and I connected with no password no login...
I could even scan to the folder...
    I built an addressbook...
    and scanning was done...

can someone explain to me what this public folder thing is...?
why I was able to use the canon walk up add user function under scanning and got it to work with no login?
and my last question is this reproducable?
or did I just luck out...?

    Re: Public folders and scanning

    How to enable Public folder
    Open Control Panel.
    Click on Network and Internet.
Click on Network and Share Center.
On the left pane, click on Change advanced share settings.
    Expand All Networks.
Make sure to select the Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders option.

Public has NO security so we normally don't use it for smb scanning meaning ANYONE on your network can see it.
