c451 - scan to ftp problem

Have a customer running winxp on several machines, connected to a c451 with embedded server. Printing from each desktop works fine. Scanning to ftp works for everybody except for one user. Settings between one-touches are identical (except for ip addy, of course). The only red flag that I have noticed so far is that the one non-working user has an ip address pretty far outta range. While everyone else in the office is at the standard range (192.168.1.120's, 130's), the nonworking computer is at 192.168.1.200.

Is that so far out of range that it would disallow scanning to the KM ftp utility? I am able to ping the machine from the desktop, able to print, able to log on to pagescope, and am able to ftp into the KM utility without a problem. I cannot, however, ping the computer from the copier. Server connection error.

any ideas? time to point a finger at their IT guys?

Maybe port 21 is blocked on that computer. If that is the case change the port on the copier and the port on the ftp utility and see if it scans then, if it scans then that tells you port 21 is blocked on that computer.
Have you tried to change the comp ip address to be in the range of the other computers.

havent tried changing the comp ip...dont really know how to. cant do ipconfig /release or /renew. im not the IT guy for them, so I dont really wanna spend too much time diagnosing network issues. basically just wanna prove that the copier is capable of talking to that computer if they get their settings correct.

it had worked on this computer up until a few weeks ago.

I would be looking at software firewalls on that problem computer. If possible to talk to their IT people, I would ask them about port 21 as well.

I'm curious, but why FTP over SMB?

One one of the working computers, go to the command prompt and then type the following.

          ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(Where the x's are, replace with the IP address of the machine that isn't working)

If you get a message asking for a username, then FTP is working fine on that PC. If you don't and get some error, then the problem is with the PC.

The IP address you mentioned is within range as long as the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0.

To make sure port 21 is open with the Windows firewall (can't help much with other firewalls), goto the control panel on the computer that isn't working and do the following.

          1. Windows Firewall
          2. "Advanced" tab
          3. Click on the "Local Area Connection" then press settings
          4. Put a tick next to "FTP Server"
          5. OK
          6. OK

This should now allow FTP communications through to that computer. If another firewall is installed, a quick Google search with the firewall name then "unblock port 21" should give you an answer.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.
