I deployed software both ways. I used AD and it worked fine except there were one or 2 connection issues on a couple of PC's at the office. The reason I say that Inventory was easier for me is because it will pinpoint any connection issues from the jump and you can still deploy software on a granular level.

A quick follow up on PDQ Deploy/Inventory. The paid version ($500 per year), is preloaded with many software builds. I do not have the paid version, but was able to demo it for a limited time. The demo period has expired and I'm now using the free version.

For practice, I built many of the same packages that came with the paid version. I've gotten much better at it. I probably have about a dozen builds in my library thus far. It should be noted that there are some limitations in the free version.

Many of the software applications require going to google and finding the "parameters". I don't really understand how these work but you don't really need to understand how it works, you just need to know the correct one to use.

It's best to use MSI files but that's not always possible. Sometime you'll have to use an .exe file and those are more challenging.

The good news is that once you build your library, you can use those builds over and over again. If you keep adding to it, eventually you'll have quite the library.

I really like both PDQ Deploy and Inventory.

I've been focusing in on PDQ Inventory. It's really cool and helpful if you're a network admin.

For starters, it scans your network for PC's/devices and tells you the hardware, software and applications that are being used. You can easily see what machines are running an older version of certain software. Then you know what you need to upgrade. All at your fingertips in one central location.

Parameters are ways of customising the install for anything from the install location, shortcuts, language preferences, accepting the EULA, and of course whether or not there are visual elements to the process.

It allows you flexibility and scripted installs.

I first took a break from CCNA to concentrate more on Windows Server then I took a break from both to clear my mind. It's important for me to take a break every once in a while because information overload can and will wear you down.

This weekend I will be going back to CCNA and more specifically - Access Control Lists. This can be a very powerful tool.

Re: Need some advice on learning networking

This past weekend, I had some issues with the server I set up in my office. Keep a couple of things in mind:

1.) As part of the online course I was doing for CCNA, I configured a fairly complex network with inter-vlan routing between 3 different vlans. This required setting up a DHCP server to hand out IP addresses for all the different subnets.

But wait...there's more!!! I also set up a Cisco Wireless LAN controller that uses a RADIUS server.

There's a lot more but you get the point. It's a bunch of stuff to deal with.

2.) I don't really need any of this stuff. I set this up to learn, not because I needed it.

Anyway, here's some advice. You can take it or leave it.

If you don't use it, you're gonna lose it. It's amazing how much I forgot. Now, with that said, I kept detailed notes and other information and I was able to get back up to speed but it took some time. It's probably not the best idea to dabble in this stuff.

              That is all.

You confirmed one of the most important rules of all: document everything. There is no change too small to make note of, even if it's just an IP change or a settings change. When something breaks, it's a great comfort to know that you have up to date and accurate documentation.

I have OneNote notebooks for each of my customers with detailed information on their configuration and any gotchas in their environment. Beyond that, I also have spreadsheets of all group policy config, and piles of contacts for different contractors and other service providers for all of them.

I remember when I was taking Latin in high school. We had a teacher who wrote on the chalk board during his lectures. The last 5 minutes of each class I wrote down everything that was on the board. He gave 2 part tests, vocabulary and translation. The vocabulary was closed book. When you finished and handed in the vocabulary you were handed the translation test which was open text book open note books. Everything that was on the translation test had been on a chalk board. One page in my notebooks covered 10 to 15 pages of the text book.
