Publisher 2007 and print driver defaults

    Hi all,

Was onsite this morning and the customer complained that when printing from publisher it would print on letterhead and not their default tray 2. Looking at it when print was pressed the source would say "auto" and I could not find a way to make it default to tray 2, each time it has to be manually selected.
Does anyone know how to make publisher 2007 use the print drivers default settings?

    Cheers.

I would check the document settings (or page setup, I think that's what it's called) and see if it is set to print to tray 1. If so, change it to Auto. That will allow the driver to over ride whatever the document's page set-up is.

Also be sure that the tray 1 settings of the mfp are set to letterhead. This should also keep the driver from printing to tray 1, unless you select letterhead as a paper type.

Unfortunatly I did all that. This version of publisher brings up a different screen when you select File, Print. On it you can select the paper size and source, orientation, duplex as well as the usuall page range etc (before you press the Properties button).
The marked place in the image always says "Automatic"

        Automatic

It looks as if the paper size is set to A4. Change to 8.5x11 and I bet your choices will multiply.

Unfortunatly all trays are filled with A4 paper, which is the standard here.

You're right about the file-->print screen being different within Publisher. When you say that it stays automatic, are you saying that you cannot access the drop down menu from the arrow? Will the driver not allow you to even pick another drawer? Or, are you saying that no matter what you pick it will not stay picked and goes right back to the automatic setting?

I believe you've stated that the copier is all set to automatic, so it will "follow" the print driver settings.

What I would do, obviously, would be to reload the driver and try the other driver as well, such as pcl6 over 5e, or even the RPCS. I generally don't use the RPCS driver, but sometimes people like the print GUI so I've loaded it.

I'm sure you've tried the alternate drivers. I don't mess with Publisher too often, as those that use it don't mess with the driver settings. The only weird things I've seen are when offices use Word Perfect, which affect some of the settings, yet they can't understand why it won't work exactly like Word. Uh, different manufacturers people.

Anyway, have you gotten any further with this problem?

              Hey schooltech,
I can change whatever settings I want in the driver however Pub 2007 seems to be the only Office product that doesn't use the drivers default settings, which is tray 2, every other tray is filled with a different letterhead.
If they select tray 2 and save the document then it will save the setting for subsequent prints but "Sometimes we forget to select the tray and we waste our letterhead." I told them I would look into it but more and more I am thinking this is something that publisher just does and they are going to have to remember to select the right tray (they only have to it once when they create the document).
As for drivers i tried a couple of Konica (it is a Bizhub C250 the pic above was from home) and even a HP driver and they all act the same.
I am thinking they are just going to have wear it.
              Thanks everyone.

If they use File/Print Setup and select the desired tray when they create the document it will retain these settings...for that document only as you said.

I use Publisher quite often and I know of no way to change the default print settings other than the above. Publisher has a mind of it's own. Quite unique.

This may sound harsh...but...If they don't know how to use a Microsoft application...they should call Microsoft. I hope you are charging them for your time. Micro$oft would. If they have a memory problem, maybe a post-it note on the monitor will remind them??

I have the feeling that if you were to find a way to change the default tray, they would end up complaining that when they want to print to their letterhead, they would complain "Sometimes we forget to select the tray and we waste our plain paper."

Relax! This firmware injection won't hurt...but it will take 45 minutes.
