    connectivity help

i thought i had this figured out, but it doesnt work and another thread game me an idea and want to see if it works or not.

i have a customer that wants to hook up a KM 1820 to two computers and create a network. i tried that and the switch wouldnt assign an ip and when i manually entered one, it wouldnt show up. i discovered that the customer has a wireless network that they are running on now. so i want to try to tap into that.

they have the dsl modem, connected to a firewall box then to an access point. can i put a wireless switch on the 1820 running an ethernet cable from 1820 to the wireless and it show up on the network? the firewall is too far to run cables at this time. trying to figure a way to get it on the network for the two computers to share print and scan.

    thanks for any assistance

Nope, you're going to connect it right into the access point. It should have a WAN output and four switch ports, and the 1820 will plug into that. If you want, either assign it an IP or have the access point assign it an IP, then static what IP has been assigned.

At that point, the 1820 will be seen on the network so the computers will be able to print to it.

Sounds like a very simple network to have a 'firewall' box connected to it. The DSL gateway modem will have firewall capabilities as well as the AP, but you don't want multiple firewall setups. If it works for their needs, then so be it. But you just don't normally see a hardware firewall on very small networks.

You said that, "i tried that and the switch wouldnt assign an ip and when i manually entered one, it wouldnt show up."

    What did you try?
What 'switch' would not assign an IP?
What would not show up when you entered one?
What were you checking that didn't show up?

The access point should be set up for DHCP, so it will assign addresses to whatever connects to it. If it is NOT set up, then you'll have to find a range to use. For instance, if their computers are connecting with 192.168.5.12 and 192.168.5.15, and these addresses are static, just check another address that does not reply back with a ping command and that should be a safe number to static into the 1820.

the access point doesnt have any other ports..its a linksys access point.
i have dlink switches and i assigned an ip address to the 1820 within that network scope and it wouldnt show up..i thought maybe the switch would assign an ip to the 1820 and it wouldnt.

the firewall covers more than those two computers..i'm just trying to join into it with the 1820.

i put in (1820) 192.168.1.110 and ping'd with no reply. i had hardwired the computer to the switch as well. the computers are also wireless, so i'm not sure if that created some kind of conflict. i looked at the ip address of the local connection and it was never populated. the wireless connection had an ip address assigned to the computer.

Try a wireless ethernet bridge. They are designed to connect wired devices to wireless networks. Configure the bridge to connect to the wireless access point, then plug it into the network port on the copier. Good luck...

Did you input the gateway address and subnet mask on the 1820?
the savin2535 is displaying well bet the hiter lamp is not shining and the lamp had been tested o.k.please kindly help.

Unfortunately, switches will not assign any addresses. They are just layer 2 devices, some can also be a layer 3 device, that store and forward(SAF) MAC id info from what's connected to them and keep collision domains to each port. They are just smart hubs. I wonder which dlink AP it is, because most wireless AP's have four switch ports behind them. Anyway, if you put a switch in there, it will be on the network and then everything should be ok.

Yeah, double check the gateway and subnet addy's.

yeah the gateway and subnet matched the host.

i'm going back monday to look into this again. i was expecting this to be easy set up...but nothing ever quite falls the way i planned it in my head..

i'm gonna clear my head this weekend and start over next week.
