Re: How to Install a Printer Driver (Guide) (WIP)

Some wild ways of doing things on here..

Here is how I do it:

    1. Download print drivers and extract them somewhere

    2. Click start and type in "Control Panel" and select it

    3. Click "Devices & Printers"

    4. Click "Add a printer"

    5. Click "The printer I want isn't listed"

    6. Click "Add a printer using an IP Address or hostname"

    7. Change "Device Type" to "TCP/IP Device" and enter the IP Address or Hostname and click Next

    8. Click have disk and browse to the driver you extracted in step 1

    9. Select device from the list and follow the prompts, print test page and finish.

Done it this exact same way for years

Apparently you haven't installed one recently. You left o0ut a step for current version on Windows 11. Before you can click "Add a printer, you have to click "Printers & scanners" then add device.

You are wrong, you do not have to do that.

Click Start and type in Control Panel and it will come up, on ANY version of Windows including 11.

Maybe a year ago when that YouTube video was made but not any more but not with the current version of Windows 11.

Which is all well and good on the system you're on, but what if you want to install a driver or printer on a system you don't have physical access to, or you want to clean up old drivers, or just want to pre-stage a driver without creating a printer?

Could you elaborate in detail on what exactly what you mean by pre-stage a driver? I've heard you metion this before and its something that I feel I should know.

It's mainly something you'd do for a client PC. There are a few main use cases:

                1. A remote user using a local printer that isn't part of a company's network. With telework being more common, we've seen plenty of requests for USB printer installs. Let's say the user gets a new home printer, if they're connected to VPN or some way that you have access to the device you can install the driver through printmanagement, which will allow them to just connect and go.

                2. In a business environment, even with group policies available for trusting specific print servers, there aren't that many people using them. If a user tries to add a shared printer, they'll be greeted with an admin prompt when it comes time to install the driver. By remotely installing the same driver that the server shares out, you can then just give them an SMB link to install the printer and have it just work (\\printserver\SharedPrinterName). Since the driver is already there, it just makes the connection for the user.

                3. Setting up a new print server, by connecting through printmanagement you can install all of the necessary drivers before creating the printers themselves.

just a couple of the use cases I've seen and used.

Wasn't going to reply to thread.

This is how I have been doing it for a decade now.

                          Remove old printers and drivers:

                          1) Control+R: Printui /s /t2
                          2) Delete old Printers, Drivers, Ports.

                          Restart Print spooler:

                          1) Control+R: Services.msc
                          2) Print Spooler: Right Click> Restart.

                          Load Drivers:
                          1) Extract file from install wizard to c:\Drivers

                          Installation:
                          1) Control+R: Control Printers
                          2) Add Printer> Wasn't Listed
                          3) Find by TCP IP> Port Number and uncheck Query.
                          4) Have Disk> C:\Drivers
                          5) Select Model > Install.

                          Final Check:
                          1) Control+R: Control printers
                          2) Right click printer> Printer Properties> Auto Config.
                          3) Apply> OK> Print test page.

This process takes me less than two-3 mins tops.

                          Never had any issues. :|

At the current time we have no moderators and the only administrator has not logged on since October 17th. I have just finished logging a Hyjacking complaint with Tucows Domains as they appear to be the domain provider. It should take a day or 2 to see what shaking that tree releases,
