    Folder Redirect

I should have listened to rthonpm. He told me to move away from Folder Redirect and over to Known Folders. I have about 30 PC's on Redirect and it's worked great for a couple of years. No problems to speak of. Until yesterday that is.

Here's the backstory. This is a laptop. He keeps it on a docking station the majority of the time. Last week he took it on a business trip to D.C. and when he got back, his desktop was gone and a message that said: "you don't have permission to view folder redirect. Or something like that.

Anyway, I can access the folder manually. No problem. But on startup I get the error and the desktop is empty. I checked the share permissions and they're good. I rejoined the domain. Same thing.

Keep in mind that nothing really lives on the local hard drive as everything is redirected to the server. The laptop had a HDD so I ended up killing 2 birds with one stone. I upgraded to an SSD with a fresh install if Win10. After rejoining the domain, Folder Redirect works again. Very confusing.

    Any thoughts?

PS - I'll be moving all the PC's to Well Known Folders.

You really should be ashamed for knowing that following rthonpm advices is best way to avoid troubles in that territory.

In example when(well if BC) told me do something that way I need no other answers.

Oh, trust me. I do know to follow rthon's advice. But I already had Folder Redirect set up before he advised against and I thought it was really, really cool. I still think it's cool but I don't need the headache and with O365, Folder Redirect is dated.

I'll leave the 'I tried to warn you' for later.

It sounds like you experienced one of the greatest problems with folder redirection: a local sync error. There's a folder, %windir%\CSC that manages the offline folder syncing database. It doesn't take more than a sneeze in the wrong direction to break it. Once it does, it just becomes a hassle of taking ownership of it, deleting, rebooting, and maybe a chkdsk or seven. This feature was originally developed for desktop redirection as an improvement on roaming profiles. Offline availability was bolted on as a means of allowing laptops to use the feature for outside of the network. It was a good for the time solution, but there's no reason to have user data backed up on-prem, especially as it puts it at risk of ransomware. It's also a Windows only solution.

OneDrive redirection works with Windows and MacOS, offers versioning, works with mobile, doesn't require VPN, and is so cheap when factored into the cost of Microsoft 365.

Oh, and: I told you so!!!

Yes. I should made myself more clear probably โ˜บ๏ธ

In any way Billy should take it not personal as I really like him admitted going wrong any time he did.
Really my kind of attitude - you're wrong stand tall and admit it make it better next time and repeat it over and over.

Your depth of knowledge on these topics is impressive. Oh, and that was pretty funny!
