Unfortunately the Pi series does not have an option for authentication. I've had similar problems recently with this exact controller. The scan function especially with e-mail is very limited. You will probably also notice that there is no option to change the port either. So another problem is that an e-mail server using a non-standard port (not 25-SMTP) will also not function with the controler. I have observed the majority of SMTP servers I work with are on non-standard ports with encrypted authentication for obvious security reasons. The only real solution is to set up your users with access to the WebScan tool and hope and pray it doesn't fail on them, unless of course you can manage to sell them newer more versatile equipment.

Another option, if the customer is up for it, is to install ArGoSoft Mail Server. It's very lightweight and easy to configure. There are only a couple of more steps for the customer to retrieve their scanned documents but it's better than nothing.

But upgrading is always a better option.
